Women’s Basketball defeat Lady Panthers 69-59

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Fueled by 20 points from guard Kash Ayuso, the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish women's basketball team won their second game of the weekend by defeating the Claflin University Lady Panthers 69-59.

The Sailfish were feeling it from three-point land in the first quarter. Going three for five from beyond the arc, PBA took a 19-11 lead after one. Kash Ayuso and Carleigh Andrews led the way with five and four points, respectively.

The Lady Panthers fought back in the second quarter. Olivia Randolph scored 10 of Claflin's second quarter points. The Lady Panthers shot an impressive 9-13 (69.2%) in the quarter and took the lead 36-32 going into the halftime break.

The Sailfish locked in on both ends of the floor in the third and fourth quarters. Limiting Claflin to an 8-27 (29.6%) shooting performance, the Sailfish outscored their opponent 37-23 in the second half. The three-ball continued to fall for PBA, shooting 4-9 (44.4%) from downtown.

Darria Whitley and Kash Ayuso locked the game down with each scoring nine points in the final frame. Despite the Lady Panthers forcing some turnovers late, they shot themselves in the foot only making 5-12 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Sailfish held on for the victory.

Gabrielle Wener was second in scoring for PBA with 15 points. Wener was just two rebounds away from a double-double with eight boards. Darria Whitley was right behind her with 12 points of her own. Anabel Ellison led the Sailfish in assists again with six in the game.

The Sailfish return to action next Saturday at Florida Southern. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
