FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team fell to Nova Southeastern in dramatic fashion conceding two goals inside the final 10 minutes to lose 3-2.
The Sailfish started the game off strong with
Taylor Jackson making a quality save on a Shark chance and minutes later,
Emma Canty scored her 5th goal of the season. Just 15 minutes into the match, Aiden McCausland deflected a Nova pass and the ball fell to
Maddy Nelson. Nelson, a graduate transfer, played a long ball to a sprinting
Marina Leal. Leal's played the inital shot with Canty coming in to clean up the chance. Despite a chaotic scramble of two Shark defenders, the goalie, Leal and her all attempting to get a piece of the ball, Canty ended up with the goal.
After the Canty goal, both teams traded a few scoring chances in the pouring rain to no avail and the Sailfish led 1-0 at the halftime break.
As the rain subsided, the second half began and Nova pounced early.
The Sharks stole a
Taylor Jackson goalie kick in the 52nd minute of play. A great move by Genesis Hernandez to get around
Anna Foreman led to her getting a shot on goal.
Taylor Jackson made the initial save on the shot. Unable to secure the ball, Tabea Schutt, unmarked, collected the rebound to tie the game at one apiece.
The Sailfish responded.
In the 80th minute, a miscue by a Shark defender on an Aiden McCausland ball into the box popped it high into the air.
Maddy Nelson fought for control and put a shot on frame that bounced off the left woodwork. However,
Brogan MacIsaac, all alone in front, floated it over the keeper to give the Sailfish a one-goal advantage with just 10 minutes to play.
About a minute later, the Sharks equalized. A Haley Mettrick cross fell to the feet of Genesis Hernandez and she beat Jackson to the bottom right of the goal with the shot.
With about 5 minutes left, it looked like the 'Fish retook the lead after
Marina Leal played
Emma Canty in all alone who put the ball in the back of the net for what would have been her 2nd of the match. However, Canty started her run just a tad early and was called offside.
In the 86th minute of play, a Jackson goal kick bounced around in the Sailfish half before a header played through to Sofia Suarez led her on to goal all alone. Suarez placed the shot into the left side netting leaving
Taylor Jackson with no chance.
The Sailfish did not go down without a fight.
Maddy Nelson had a chance to tie it late but the shot was headed away by a Shark defender over the goal. PBA was unable to convert on the ensuing corner kick.
The Sailfish return to action on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. when they host Rollins College at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
