Volleyball Drops Matches in Bash at the Beach Finale

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team concluded its Bash at the Beach tournament Saturday with matches against Maryville and Rockhurst.

The Sailfish entered the day coming off a five-set battle against Wheeling on Friday night. PBA could not bounce back with the quick turnaround, dropping both of its matches on Saturday. The Sailfish fell to Maryville (5-2) 3-1 to start the day. PBA finished the tournament in another five-set affair against Rockhurst (6-1). The 'Fish led 2-1 in the match, but could not put the Hawks away, falling 3-2.

PBA begins its Sunshine State Conference slate against Barry on Friday night. The match in Rubin Arena takes place at 7:00 p.m.

Match One – MU: 3, PBA: 1

Coming off a late-night match where they broke a D2 era program record for kills in a match, the Sailfish started slowly on the offensive end. PBA hit .098 in the first set as Maryville took the opening frame, 25-18.

Serve received plagued the Sailfish throughout the match. Maryville totaled 15 aces, including four in each of the second, third, and fourth sets. The tough serves made it harder for PBA to get into its offense, hitting .162 in the second set. The Saints took the frame 25-20.

Things looked bleak in the third set as Maryville led the Sailfish 24-22. Kills from Kaileigh Ammons and Abbie Zylstra kept the 'Fish alive, and an ace from Payton Ahrenstorff gave PBA a 25-24 lead. The Saint retook a 26-25 lead, but a 3-0 run with two unforced errors by MU and a Harper Stokes kill allowed PBA to win the set 28-26. The Sailfish offense was much improved in the set, hitting .277.

Unfortunately for the 'Fish, they failed to complete the comeback. Defensive adjustments caused PBA to hit just .150 in the fourth set. MU won the fourth, 25-18, clinching the match.

Zylstra totaled a team-high 13 kills and seven digs. Mary Morgan Formby and Ammons tied for 11 kills each. Ammons hit an efficient .417 with five total blocks. Jayden Otto posted a season-high 37 assists with 11 digs. Ahrenstorff led PBA with 22 digs.

Unforced errors cost the Sailfish. PBA gave the Saints free points on 25 unforced errors when accounting for attacking errors and service errors.

Match Two – RU: 3, PBA: 2

The Sailfish played from behind to start their match against Rockhurst. The Hawks led the 'Fish 22-18 before a 5-0 run with kills from Stokes and Formby and an ace from Jayna Bredenberg put the 'Fish ahead 23-22. Rockhurst battled back to retake a 25-24 lead. Zylstra tied it at 25 with a kill before Ammons gave the 'Fish a 26-25 lead with a kill of her own. Steph Boyer closed the set with an ace, leading to a 27-25 win for PBA.

PBA increased its hitting percentage in the second set but so did the visitors. Rockhurst his .353 in the second set, tying the match by taking the frame 25-21. The Sailfish made some adjustments and slowed down the Hawks' attack in the third set. PBA held Rockhurst to a .109 hitting percentage to take the third set 25-21.

The Sailfish held a 21-20 lead in the fourth set and had a chance to put the match away. Rockhurst did not give in. Three Hawk kills a service error, and an attack error by PBA allowed RU to win the set 25-23 to force a fifth set.

The beginning of the final set was neck-and-neck with a kill from Ammons tying the frame 7-7. Two unforced errors gave Rockhurst some momentum, and the Hawks pulled away. RU won the final set 15-8 to win the match.

Formby led PBA with 16 kills, including an impressive .424 hitting percentage. Zylstra totaled 15 kills and 17 digs. Ammons finished with 12 kills and four blocks. Stokes recorded nine kills on a .500 hitting percentage and five blocks. Otto led the 'Fish with 47 assists with 16 digs. Ahrenstorff tallied 22 digs with four aces. Bredenberg added 14 kills of her own.
