GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team kicked off a South Carolina road swing today by facing the Lander Bearcats. In a game that didn't have a lot of clear-cut chances, the Sailfish put home one opportunity and kept their first clean sheet of the season to capture a 1-0 win and move to 2-1 on the season.
The Sailfish and Bearcats played an offensive thriller in West Palm Beach last season with PBA prevailing 3-2, but tonight just one shot found the back of the net. In the 25th minute,
Alessandro Marongiu beat his man on the left wing and cut back a ball to the middle of the box. Midfielder
Narcis Bou Dalmau flicked the ball along to
Hans Oeftger who took a touch and roofed the ball into the top of the goal for his first of the season and the second assist of the year for Bou Dalmau. The two sides went into the half with PBA up 1-0, having outshot the home side 5-3.
The Sailfish were able to hold off their opponents in the second half and see the game out. Lander outshot PBA 8-2 in the second half as they chased a tying goal but they could create just one shot on target. The 'Fish defense line that struggled in their last contest against Florida Memorial looked solid once again with the addition of usual starters
Orion McHugh and
Eden O'Leary. Goalie
Salvador Plaza picked up his first clean sheet of the season, as he made three saves.
The Sailfish have an off day tomorrow to recharge and travel to Florence where they will take on Francis Marion at 3 pm on Sunday. The Patriots are currently 1-0-1 on the early season.
