WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team hosted Florida National tonight at the Rinker Athletic Campus. Playing in their second home match of the season, the Sailfish were held to a 2-2 draw by the Conquistadors. PBA's record moves to 3-4-1 on the season as they head back into conference play next week.
The Sailfish took a break from Sunshine State Conference play tonight as they took on NAIA opponents Florida National. With the result counting towards PBA's record but not their region or postseason ranking, the Sailfish were able to get deeper into their bench throughout the night and give minutes to bench members. It was primarily the regulars to start the game for PBA as they started strong and scored on the first real chance they created as
Narcis Bou Dalmau scored in the ninth minute. Midfielder
Yannick Toth was able to play a ball from the top right of the box across to a streaking Bou Dalmau in stride as the Spanish midfielder was able to one-touch the ball into the net for his second goal of the season.
It was a fairly even opening half as each side was able to create a few chances in the opening 45 minutes but just the one Sailfish goal was the only breakthrough from either side.
Omar Einarsson got the start in goal for the Sailfish for the second time this year and was called upon to make four saves in the first half as the sides went into the break with the 'Fish up 1-0.
PBA didn't come out of the locker room as the top side early in the second half as it was the road Conquistadors who created multiple chances early on and they finally capitalized in the 49th minute to tie the game. The Sailfish were able to play their way back into the game in the second half but FNU was the side that scored the next goal. Einarsson was playing a high line in the PBA net throughout the night to some success but it backfired in the 61st minute as he got caught on the ball, was dispossessed, and gave an open goal to the FNU attacker. It took just five minutes for PBA to come up with a response and it was Bou Dalmau again, as he picked up a ball in the left side of the box from
Nicklas Clausen and chipped the keeper into the far side of the net for his second goal on the night.
With the game tied, each side had good looks late including a
Nico Wagner miss on the doorstep from a cross but the game remained 2-2. The shot final 17-14 in favor of the road side and Einersson was called on to make eight saves for PBA on the night.
The Sailfish were able to give 21 players minutes on the night which they hope will pay dividends later in the season as they prepare to dive back into conference play this weekend. PBA plays host to Saint Leo this Saturday at 7 pm at the RAC as the Lions will enter with a 3-3-3 record overall and a 1-0-1 SSC record.Â
