WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team played its first home match of the season tonight as they hosted No. 15 ranked Rollins College Sunshine State Conference game. The Sailfish struck first but the Tars equalized in the second half before falling 3-2. PBA falls to 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in SSC play with the defeat.
The Sailfish played in front of a good home crowd tonight as they played their first home match of the season. The Sailfish scored first in the 19th minute when
Nicklas Clausen was brought down inside the box after a strong run.
Yannick Toth stepped up to the spot and calmly put the ball into the corner to score in his second straight game. The Sailfish outshot the Tars 6-5 in the first half as each goalie was called upon to make two saves. Neither side was able to create many clear-cut chances in the opening half, but that would change in the second 45 minutes as PBA led 1-0 at the half.
Eight minutes into the second half, the Tars were able to equalize from a set piece. A deep free kick was perfectly taken from the Tars Jari Polm as
Salvador Plaza had no chance to make a save with the quality of the strike. After facing the first bit of adversity in the game, the 'Fish battled back and quickly answered.
Narcis Bou Dalmau was able to convert on a breakaway with Clausen. The Sailfish midfielder found Clausen at the perfect time as his ball in behind sprung the PBA striker who was able to convert on his second goal of the season.Â
PBA battled to hold onto the lead for the next 25 minutes as they were able to repel Rollins pressure. Plaza came up big in the second half on multiple occasions as he made three big saves. The referee said the Rollins striker was brought down just inside the box in the 84th minute. Despite PBA protest, the call stood and Plaza was beaten from the spot to tie the game 2-2. With the game up in the air, the game opened up as both sides looked to grab the victory. The Sailfish had chances from
Giancarlo Dostilio, Clausen, and defenders from a Sailfish corner late but were unable to find the back of the net.
With four minutes left, the Sailfish got caught on the ball in the midfield after a dangerous Rollins slide tackle that the referee allowed to stand. A PBA counterattack turned straight into a Rollins breakaway as a cross from the left side of the box was headed home by the Tars to put them ahead 3-2. The Sailfish fought to create chances late but they were unable to break through before time expired.
The Sailfish return to action next Wednesday when they get a break from SSC play to host Florida National. PBA will host the Conquistadors at the Rinker Athletic Campus at 7 pm. FNU will enter the game with a 6-1-1 record on the season.Â
