Softball Drops a Pair of Games at Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team concluded its series at Barry on Friday.

The Sailfish tried to even up the series after dropping Thursday's game. PBA took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning, but Barry hit a walk-off two-run home run to steal the game, 4-3, and clinch the series. Barry took the second game of the day in more commanding fashion, 5-0.

PBA travels to Embry-Riddle next week for a Saturday/Sunday series against the Eagles. The first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader in Daytona Beach takes place at 4 p.m.

Game One - Barry: 4, PBA: 3

The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel through the first four innings. Cambria Arturo got the start in the circle. She did not allow a run and allowed just one hit in the first four innings.

PBA got the scoring started with a two-out rally in the fifth inning. Daylin Hejtmanek singled up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Briana Rodriguez drove her in with an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0. Two walks loaded the bases, moving B. Rodriguez to third base. She scored on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 game.

The Bucs struck back in the bottom of the inning. Barry plated one run after two hit batters and two singles to make it 2-1. Barry nearly added another run on a sac fly, but Hejtmanek delivered a strike from centerfield that prevented a second run from scoring.

PBA took advantage of some Barry errors in the sixth inning. After Bella O'Connor singled, a pair of Bucs miscues allowed another run to score, making it 3-1. Barry reduced the deficit to one run again in the bottom of the sixth after a walk and a double made it 3-2.

A hit batter put the leadoff runner on base setting up the two-run home run that won the game for the Bucs, 4-3.

B. Rodriguez led PBA with two hits, one run, and one RBI. Arturo pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Lacy Marty pitched one inning in relief. She surrendered two runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Game Two - Barry: 4, PBA: 3

The Bucs struck first in game two. A leadoff walk came back to bite the Sailfish. The runner later scored after a single and a throwing error to make it 1-0. The Sailfish defense limited the damage as Gracie Mullett caught a flyball and threw out the Buc trying to tag up from third to end the inning.

The 'Fish surrendered two more runs to Barry in the third inning. An error to start the inning put the leadoff runner on base. She advanced to second on a sac bunt, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sac fly. A pair of two-out hits scored another run for the Bucs and make it a 3-0 lead. The hosts tacked on two more runs on five hits in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

The Sailfish left eight runners on base in the game, including two in the final inning; however, PBA failed to get the clutch hits it needed. Barry completed the sweep with a 5-0 win.

Hejtmanek had a team-high three hits while Madison Schlichte went 2-for-3 at the dish.

Karen Vasquez pitched a complete game. She gave up three earned runs on eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
