DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team began its series against the Eagles of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Friday evening.
Two first-inning runs proved to be enough run support for the Sailfish pitching staff.
Chloe Nepveux picked up the win and
Cambria Arturo earned the save as PBA took the first game of the weekend, 2-1.
Dallas Watterson went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run. PBA totaled six hits in the game.
Nepveux pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one earned run on six hits with no walks allowed. Arturo entered the game in the fifth inning. She didn't give up a run and surrendered only one hit with two strikeouts.
PBA recorded four singles in the first inning.
Bella O'Connor drove in the first run for the Sailfish, sending a single up the middle to score
Briana Rodriguez. PBA got another run after an ERAU error. The miscue allowed Watterson to score and make it a 2-0 game.
Although Nepveux surrendered a few hits, she navigated the first four innings brilliantly. She escaped the bottom of the second by forcing a lineout to strand the bases loaded. ERAU gained some momentum in the fifth inning. A pair of singles set up a sac bunt where the Eagles' runner scored all the way from second, and the runner on first moved to third base. Arturo entered the game and was aided by a double play as
Isabella Hernandez doubled up the baserunner on a caught line drive to keep it a 2-1 game.
Arturo gave up a hit, followed by a stolen base, in the sixth inning; however, she got out of the inning unscathed. She set down the Eagles easily in the seventh with two strikeouts to complete the 2-1 win for PBA.
The Sailfish complete their series against ERAU on Saturday in a doubleheader. The first pitch of game one takes place at 1 p.m. in Daytona Beach.
