DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team played a pair of games against Embry-Riddle on Saturday.
The Sailfish took advantage of some shoddy Eagles' defense in game one. Embry-Riddle committed six errors in the first game of today which helped PBA score nine runs. The Sailfish clinched the series with a 9-5 win in game one. ERAU avoided the sweep, taking the lead late in game two. The Eagles won the final game of the series, 2-1.
PBA returns home for a three-game series against Rollins next weekend. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Simpson Field.
Game One – PBA: 9, ERAU: 5
The Sailfish got on the board early in game one. A pair of errors and a fielder's choice plated PBA's first run in the first inning. The 'Fish struck for four more runs in the second. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for PBA. A fielder's choice allowed one run to score.
Larken Maseda sent a fly ball deep enough to score
Briana Rodriguez, and
Bella O'Connor drove in
Evoni Rodriguez and
Dallas Watterson with a single that was misplayed in left field to make it a 5-0 game.
ERAU got one run back in the third thanks to a pair of PBA errors. The Sailfish scored two more in the fourth inning, including an RBI double from Watterson. The Eagles scored another run in the fifth to make it 7-2.
The Sailfish added some insurance in the sixth. Maseda drove in E. Rodriguez with an RBI single. O'Connor doubled to drive in Maseda and make it 9-2. ERAU did not go down quietly. The Eagles scored three runs on four hits in the seventh, but it was too little too late for the hosts who fell, 9-5.
Karen Vasquez started in the circle. She pitched six innings, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
Cambria Arturo ended the game, giving up two hits in the seventh, but got the Sailfish out of the inning to end the game.
E. Rodriguez and O'Connor led PBA with two hits each. Maseda finished with three RBIs. O'Connor and Watterson totaled two RBIs each.
Game Two – ERAU: 2, PBA: 1
The second game of the day was more of a low-scoring affair.
Ashlyn Storms started in the circle for the Sailfish. She did not allow a run through the first three innings.
PBA pushed across a run in the third inning. A single from B. Rodriguez that got away from the right-fielder allowed her to get to third base. She scored on a bunt from E. Rodriguez to make it 1-0 PBA.
ERAU scored a pair of runs on four hits that proved to be enough run support for the rest of the game. The Sailfish led off the top of the seventh with a single, but a double play on a line drive killed the rally. ERAU avoided the sweep by winning 2-1.
Storms pitched all six innings, giving up two runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Madison Schlichte led PBA with two hits.
