WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team concluded its series against Florida Southern on Saturday.
After a tough first game where the Mocs won 8-0, the Sailfish bounced back in an exciting second game. PBA fought back from an early 3-0 deficit to win 6-5 and clinch the series. Today's win marks back-to-back series wins for the 'Fish.
PBA hits the road next week to play Barry in a three-game series on Thursday and Friday. The first pitch on Thursday is set for 7:00 p.m. in Miami Shores, Fla.
Game One – FSC: 8, PBA: 0
Florida Southern got revenge on the 'Fish after dropping Friday's game 5-0. The Mocs got on the board in the second inning. A single and a double that snuck by a diving
Briana Rodriguez and made its way to the wall allowed one run to score.
The Sailfish had two runners on base in the third and fourth innings but came up empty on the offensive end. FSC ended the game early, plating seven runs in the fifth inning on six hits and two walks to take an 8-0 lead. The Sailfish couldn't prevent the run rule, coming away scoreless in the fifth. FSC won the game 8-0 in five innings to even the series.
Cambria Arturo started in the circle. She gave up five earned runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.
Ashlyn Storms surrendered three earned runs on four hits and no walks.
Dallas Watterson led the PBA offense with two hits in the game.
Game Two – PBA: 6, FSC: 5
The Mocs kept their offensive momentum going in the second game. FSC scored three runs on four hits and a walk to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. PBA answered in the bottom of the frame.
Daylin Hejtmanek followed by a walk from B. Rodriguez and a bunt single from
Evoni Rodriguez. The bases were loaded for a 3-RBI double for Watterson that tied the game at three. PBA wasn't done as
Bella O'Connor sent a single to centerfield that drove in Watterson and gave the 'Fish a 4-3 lead.
Karen Vasquez got the start in the circle. She settled down after the first inning, hanging a zero in three consecutive innings. FSC got to her in the fifth inning. The Mocs tied the game, scoring one run on two hits and one walk, making it a 4-4 game. PBA re-took the league in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-out rally. Watterson started the fun with a double.
Larken Maseda switched places with a double of her own that made it 5-4 PBA.
Kendall Baer came through with a blooper that fell for a single that allowed Maseda to score and make it 6-4.
PBA kept the Mocs at bay with some great defense in the sixth inning. Bella Hernandez made a sliding stop at second base to get the leadoff hitter out to open the inning. After a strikeout from Vasquez, B. Rodriguez made a SportsCenter-worthy catch in leftfield to end the inning and keep the lead for the 'Fish.
FSC looked to come back in the seventh inning, starting the frame with a solo home run. After a Mocs' single,
Lacy Marty entered the circle to close the game. She gave up a pair of singles but got the first out of the inning at home as a relay of Rodriguez to Watterson to Maseda got the runner trying to score from second. FSC has runners on first and second with one out. Marty forced a groundball to third; Watterson fielded it and stepped on third, nearly ending the game with a double play, but her throw to first was just late. The game ended after Marty forced a groundball to second that was fielded by Hernandez to win the game 6-5.
Watterson led PBA's offense with two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored. E. Rodriguez was 1-for-2 with one walk and a stolen base. Vasquez gave up five earned runs in six innings on 12 hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Marty got the save, pitching one inning and getting PBA out of the jam.
