WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team had an exciting end to its series against Lynn on Saturday.
After taking the first game in dominant fashion, 9-0. The Sailfish entered the final game of the series looking for the sweep. PBA entered the bottom of the seventh, trailing 3-1. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for
Larken Maseda who sent a high flyball over the left-field fence for a walk-off grand slam. PBA completed the sweep, winning 5-3. The hit was Maseda's first home run of her Sailfish career.
The Sailfish look to keep the momentum going next weekend against Florida Southern. PBA plays three games against the Mocs, with the first game Friday night taking place at 6 p.m. at Simpson Field.
Game One – PBA: 9, Lynn: 0
The Sailfish started the day the same way Friday night's game ended. A single from
Briana Rodriguez set up an RBI triple by
Evoni Rodriguez. E. Rodriguez also scored on the play thanks to a Lynn error. Maseda drove in
Dallas Watterson later in the inning with a single through the left side. Maseda moved stole second and scored from second on a wild pitch where
Bella O'Connor struckout but reached first as the ball made its way to the backstop. PBA led 4-0 after the first inning.
PBA opened the third inning with singles by
Elisa Grande and Maseda. A stolen base put runners on second and third to set up an RBI single from O'Connor to make it 5-0. PBA plated another run on a fielder's choice by
Daylin Hejtmanek to take a 6-0 lead.
Maseda came through again in the fourth with an RBI double that drove in Watterson to make it 7-0. O'Connor sent a single through the left side to score two more runs and make it a 9-0 game.
Cambria Arturo entered the circle in the third inning and pitched three scoreless innings. She earned the win, closing out the fifth to end the game, 9-0. Arturo gave up one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.
Chloe Nepveux started the game in the circle, pitching two scoreless innings with three hits.
Maseda finished with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. B. Rodriguez, E. Rodriguez, and O'Connor recorded two hits each. O'Connor tallied three RBIs. Maseda had two RBIs, two stolen bases, and two runs scored.
Game Two – PBA: 5, Lynn: 3
The Fighting Knights struck first in game two. Lynn did not hit a ball passed the infield, but the visitors scored two runs on three hits and a costly dropped fly ball that would've ended the inning.
The Sailfish manufactured a run in the third inning. E. Rodriguez laid down a bunt for a hit and stole second base. She advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.
Lynn made it a 3-1 game after a solo home run. PBA had two runners on in the bottom of the sixth but came up empty.
The Sailfish needed two runs to stay alive in the bottom of the seventh. B. Rodriguez walked to start the inning. E. Rodriguez singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. A groundout moved the runners to second and third. Grande walked which set the table for a dramatic grand slam by Maseda that led to the 5-3 win for the 'Fish.
E. Rodriguez and
Isabella Hernandez led PBA with two hits each. Maseda recorded all four of PBA's RBIs on one swing.
PBA used three pitchers in the game.
Karen Vasquez got the start, throwing four innings. She gave up one earned run on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Ashlyn Storms threw one inning of relief, giving up one run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Lacy Mary earned the win, pitching 1.2 perfect innings.
