Softball Comes Up Short at Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team finished its series against Eckerd with a single game on Saturday.

The game had an early 10 a.m. start to avoid incoming weather. The Tritons jumped out to two multi-run leads, but the Sailfish battled back, including a game-tying home run by Bella O'Connor in the sixth that knotted it up at five in the sixth inning. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, Eckerd responded with a three-run sixth inning of its own that was too much to overcome. The Tritons completed the series sweep, 8-5.

Elisa Grande recorded a team-high three hits for the 'Fish with an RBI. Evoni Rodriguez tallied two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. O'Connor finished the day with three RBIs, including the home run.

Karen Vasquez got the start in the circle. She pitched five innings, surrendering three earned runs on nine hits and no walks with three strikeouts. Ashlyn Storms pitched one inning, giving up three runs, none earned, on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Eckerd got its bats going early in the game. The Tritons plated one run on three hits to take a 1-0 lead. Vasquez forced a strikeout to limit the damage and end the inning. A solo homer from the Tritons in the third inning made it a 2-0 game.

E. Rodriguez started a rally with a single to right field to begin the fourth inning. An error put runners on first and second with no outs. Elisa Grande singled to left center and drove in Rodriguez to plate PBA's first run on the day. A sacrifice bunt set up a sacrifice fly from O'Connor to score another run and tie the game at two.

Eckerd took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits and a Sailfish error to lead 5-2. PBA manufactured a run in the fifth after an error and wild pitch set up an RBI single by E. Rodriguez to make it 5-3 EC. The Sailfish tied the game at five in the sixth thanks to a two-run home run by O'Connor that scored Larken Maseda.

The Tritons did not let their lead slip away for long. The hosts pushed across three runs on two hits, an error, and a walk to take an 8-5 lead. PBA mustered two base runners in the seventh but was unable to complete another comeback attempt.

PBA returns home next weekend for a three-game series against Lynn. The first game takes place on Friday at Simpson Field at 6 p.m.
