WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team hosted SSC opponent Tampa in a thrilling matchup on Saturday night.
Will Lee hit a heroic shot with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 65, leading to overtime. The Sailfish trailed by one in overtime with 40 seconds to play. Another triple from Lee put PBA (11-10, 7-8 SSC) ahead by two, but Tampa (7-13, 6-8 SSC) scored a layup to tie the game at 77 with nine seconds to go. Freshman
Kolbe Ashe decided to take it himself for PBA, taking the ball the length of the floor, driving baseline, and laying it up with his left hand to put the 'Fish ahead 79-77 with a second to go. PBA got the final stop of the game to win by two.
Lee led PBA with a career-high 29 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Trent McNair added 19 points with seven rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal. McNair scored seven of his 19 points in overtime.
Jalen Cooper racked up another double-double, recording 11 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals.
Jakob Hester tallied nine points, six assists, five rebounds, one block, and one steal.
With tonight's win, PBA passes Tampa to whole sole possession of seventh place in the SSC standings.
The Sailfish didn't have the most success getting shots to fall in the first half, but they made up for it on the boards. PBA outrebounded Tampa 26-15 in the period, including 10 offensive rebounds that led to 12 second-chance points.
Tampa led for most of the half. The Spartans led 31-23 with 3:30 remaining in the period. A pair of free throws by
Ryan Claflin started a 10-2 run from the Sailfish. Lee scored PBA's last eight points of the period, including a 3-pointer off a slick behind-the-back pass from McNair to tie the game at 33 at halftime. Lee finished with 10 points in the period.
The second half followed the same script as the first half. Tampa led for most of the period, but hustle and rebounding kept the 'Fish in the game. Things looked grim for the 'Fish as PBA trailed by three with 19 seconds remaining. Lee played the hero for the 'Fish knocking down a transition 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go, tying the game at 65. The PBA defense forced a stop to send the game to overtime.
PBA led by as much as five after McNair scored the first seven Sailfish points in overtime. Tampa put together consecutive stops on the defensive end to stay in the game. An old-fashioned 3-point play and a layup tied the game at 77. With nine seconds left on the clock, Ashe took matters into his own hands, scoring the game-winning bucket.
Tampa outshot the Sailfish 55 percent to 38 percent, but PBA made up for it by outrebounding the Spartans 46-34. PBA held a 23-0 advantage in second-chance points which made all the difference in the game.
The Sailfish travel to Embry-Riddle on Wednesday. The matchup against the Eagles tips off at 7:30 p.m.
