WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team played its regular season finale on Saturday at Rollins.
Jalen Cooper led the charge with a career-high 33 points as PBA completed a 16-point comeback to win 94-87. Today's win clinched the fifth seed for the Sailfish in the Sunshine State Conference tournament. PBA will face Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. in the first round of the tournament.
Cooper added 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block to his stat line.
Will Lee went off for 23 points with nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals.
Aleksa Rakic scored 12 points with four assists and one rebound.
Marcus Montalvo retuned to the PBA rotation, scoring 10 points off the bench with four rebounds.
Bryce Laskey added nine points with three rebounds and two assists.
Ryan Claflin tallied seven points with four rebounds and two assists.
The first half was an offensive slugfest with each team trading punches in the form of 3-pointers. The Tars hit eight of their first 10 threes in the game, helping hosts take a 48-32 lead at the 3:39 mark in the first period.
The Sailfish offense kept PBA in the game, doing their best to keep up with Rollins. As the second half winded down, Cooper and Lee went to work to cut into the deficit. The duo scored PBA's last 18 points of the first period to make it 55-46 Tars at halftime. The Sailfish shot 64 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range in the first period. The Tars hit 11-of-16 3-pointers in the first half.
PBA did a better job of chasing the Tars off the 3-point line in the second half. The Sailfish strung together some stops to lower the deficit. A layup from Cooper kickstarted a 13-2 run, including a 3-pointer from Laskey to tie the game at 70 with nine minutes to play.
PBA took the lead after a pair of free throws from Rakic. A 3-pointer from Montalvo put the 'Fish up by five. Rollins battled back to tie the game at 77 with 5:28 to go. Buckets from Lee, Rakic, and Claflin put PBA ahead 84-77.
Rollins cut the deficit back down to two after some free throws and a 3-pointer. Cooper and Montalvo closed out the game at the free throw line, sealing the 94-87 win for the 'Fish.
PBA outshot the Tars 62 percent to 52 percent in the game. PBA converted on 13-of-24 3-pointers. The Sailfish won the rebounding battle, 28-25. The Rollins only scored three bench points in the game. PBA made 22 trips to the free throw line, making 17 attempts.
The Sailfish travel to Melbourne, Fla. to take on the Panthers on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
