WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team finished up their first taste of Sunshine State Conference action with a double header against #4 Tampa earlier this evening. It was a tough outing for the Sailfish offensively, losing both games 10-2 and 8-1.
In the first game, The Spartans opened things up with a solo home run and an RBI double to right field. The Spartans were once again rolling offensively with 16 total hits in this game. They would multiple runs across the middle innings and lead 9-0 heading in to the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Sailfish would show some signs of life late in the game with two runs of their own.
Pedro Figueroa and
Nate Housen would reach base on back-to-back doubles. Figueroa would score on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly ball from
Jeremy Texel would bring Housen in to score. The Spartans would prevent the Sailfish comeback with some solid relief pitching and another insurance run in the top of the ninth.
The Spartans would continue their offensive showcase in the second game as well. They would tally 11 hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The Sailfish would get some unlucky breaks in this second game and couldn't really get anything going, only managing one hit. That single hit, from freshman
Elias Machado, did manage to drive in PBA's only run of the game. That was all the Sailfish could muster, as the Spartan defense stifled any chance of a comeback.
PBA will be back at J.M. "Jake" Rubin Park on Tuesday, Feb. 28 to take on Barry.
