WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team hosted the Barry Buccaneers at Rubin Arena for senior day today. PBA fell behind early against the Bucs but stormed back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth before falling at the buzzer 70-67. The Sailfish fall to 10-15 on the season and 6-13 in Sunshine State Conference play.
The Bucs were firing from the field in the opening half, as they shot 59 percent from the floor and jumped out to an early lead. The Sailfish were 5-of-13 from the floor in the first quarter and 6-of-13 in the second led by
Claire Davis who came off the bench to score ten points in the opening half. The Sailfish trailed 40-29 at the half against the Bucs in a game PBA needs to move up the SSC standings ahead of the conference tournament.
The Sailfish trailed by as many as 17 points in the third as it looked like the Bucs were in control. A 7-0 PBA run cut the deficit down to eight in the fourth quarter before
Kash Ayuso scored six straight points as the 'Fish tied the game up with one minute remaining. A PBA turnover while down two and an Ayuso three-pointer as time expired came up short as PBA fell by three.
Davis finished with a game-high 18 points off the bench to lead the Sailfish while
Kash Ayuso added ten. Honored senior
Maria Benitez-Zayas scored 15 points and added seven assists while second senior
Alma Danielsson scored five points and pulled down five boards in their final game at Rubin Arena. The Sailfish finished the night shooting 41 percent from the floor and 5-of-19 from three while the Bucs finished at 47 percent overall.
The Sailfish remain half a game back of the eighth seed in the SSC Tournament with one game remaining. The Sailfish will need a win at Rollins on Saturday to have a chance to make the tournament as PBA defeated the Tars 65-59 early this season. Rollins is 8-17 and 3-15 in SSC play this year.
