Sailfish Season Ends with Defeat at Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team traveled to face Rollins College in a must-win game to give them a chance to make the Sunshine State Conference tournament. The Sailfish had a slow start in the opening quarter and were never able to make up the deficit as they fell 76-68. The defeat takes the Sailfish final record to 10-16 on the season and 6-14 in SSC play.

PBA fell behind 8-0 early on as the 'Fish went nearly the first four minutes of play without a point before Alma Danielsson knocked down the three to break the early scoring drought. Maria Benitez-Zayas led the way offensively with five points in the opening quarter as the Sailfish trailed 21-13.

The Sailfish shot 5-of-15 in each of the opening two quarters but PBA was better defensively as they held the Tars to just 12 points in the second. Benitez-Zayas once again continued to carry the offense as she scored eight of the team's 16 points in the quarter. PBA cut the deficit to as low as one point in the quarter but never could get even or ahead in the game as PBA trailed 33-29 at the half.

After a low-scoring third quarter that saw the Tars outscore PBA 16-13, the Sailfish had ten minutes left to extend their year into the postseason. The 'Fish cut the Tars lead to six points with five minutes remaining but PBA went on a four-minute scoring drought as Rollins put the game away by building the lead back to 13. The Tars shot 62 percent from the floor in the second half while PBA was able to just hit 36 percent.

Darria Whitley scored all 18 of her points in the second half for the Sailfish as she tied for a game-high with her teammate Benitez-Zayas. In her final collegiate game, the Sailfish point guard scored 18 points and finished with eight assists and four rebounds. PBA's leading scorers Kash Ayuso and Mariyah Fletcher combined for just nine points and shot 3-of-16 from the floor.

PBA finishes the year with its best record since the 2015-16 season but finishes just a game short of an SSC Tournament appearance. The Sailfish got one-half of the help they needed as Embry-Riddle defeated Nova Southeastern but was unable to take care of their own business as PBA's season comes to an end.
