MIAMI GARDENS, Fla -- The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team was able to escape Miami Gardens with a win tonight after taking on the Bobcats of St. Thomas University. PBA was able to hold off a comeback from the Bobcats in a tightly contested game, winning 13-12.
St. Thomas came into this game ranked #8 in NAIA and definietly showcased why they earned that ranking tonight. The Sailfish were able to open things up with two runs in the second inning, but the Bobcats responded with a multiple RBI triple and another RBI single in later in the inning to make the score 4-2. STU would plate two more runs in the fourth inning and seemed to have all of the momentum.
The Sailfish would make a big push in the middle innings to swing the momentum back in their favor. In the fifth,
Dre Llopiz doubled to right field and would later be batted in by
Sal Grinstead. The 'Fish would explode and take the lead in the sixth inning.
Pedro Figueroa,
Nate Housen, and
Sean Williams were able to get on base to start the inning.
Giovany Lorenzo would sub in as a pinch hitter and drive Figueroa and Housen in to score. Williams would later score on a passed ball to tie the game up 6-6. Back to back errors by the Bobcats would lead to two more PBA runs coming in to score, giving the 'Fish a 8-6 lead.
The Sailfish would try to tack on some insurance runs in the eighth inning. Figueroa added to his impressive day with an RBI double to left center and
Davis Blair's sacrifice fly was able to plate a run. PBA would get two runs on Bobcat walks and Grinstead would get another RBI to make the score 13-6 in favor of the Sailfish. St. Thomas, however, would not go down without a fight. The Bobcats would cut the lead to just two in the eighth inning after scoring five runs of their own.
STU would get one more run to touch home plate in the bottom of the ninth, but solid defense by the Sailfish and relief effort from
Daniel Foster would strand the tying run on base to take the win 13-12.
PBA will hit the road again next week to take on Barry University on Feb. 21.
