ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic men's lacrosse team began its sixth season in program history on Friday. The Sailfish fell to Flagler 18-10.
Neil Calkin notched a hat trick for the 'Fish while
Caleb Southard and
Dylan Insolia scored two goals each.
Cooper Porter distributed two assists in his Sailfish debut. PBA goalkeeper
Ben Lightsey made his 15th career start and made 15 saves in net.
After a 35-minute weather delay, the Saints started the game on a 2-0 run before a freshman-to-freshman connection got PBA on the scoreboard. Porter assisted
Keegan Southard for PBA's first goal of the season. Southard launched a shot from the perimeter for his first career goal. Calkin scored his first of three for the Fish' to tie the game at two a piece with 14:42 left in the second quarter. The Sailfish capped off a 4-0 run in the first half courtesy of
Caleb Southard as the sophomore scored two goals in 19 seconds. PBA led 4-2 in the second quarter before the Saints went on a 3-0 run. The 'Fish capitalized off a Saints penalty when Calkin scored with 35 seconds left in the first half. PBA trailed FC 6-5 at halftime.
In the second half,
Henry Sloyan passed for his sixteenth career assist at the 6:39 mark in the 3rd quarter when he connected with Calkin for his third goal. Insolia produced in the third quarter as the junior scored two consecutive goals at the 3:14 and 2:14 mark. With 6:31 left in the fourth quarter,
Hunter Hopman scored his 37th career goal unassisted. PBA's final score came from freshman
Sarver Adams, who scored his first career goal with 3:43 left in the game. The Saints outscored the Sailfish 12-5 in the second half, which closed out the game at 18-10.
Defensively,
Dylan Hunt and
Christian Bond caused two turnovers each. The Saints picked up 45 ground balls and went 19-19 on clears. Additionally, Flager outshot PBA 46-32.
Next, PBA hosts No. 5 Adelphi for its home opener on Friday, Feb. 17.
