BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team continued non-conference play today as they faced the Bowie State Bulldogs on a neutral floor. The Sailfish jumped ahead early and held on throughout the game as they captured an 83-67 victory. PBA's record moves to 5-5 overall with the win.
The Sailfish defense set the tempo of the game from the jump, as they held the Bulldogs to 29 percent shooting in the opening quarter.
Mariyah Fletcher led the PBA offense as she scored six points in the opening ten minutes of play. The 'Fish shot 40 percent from the field as they led 17-13 after the first.
Jillian Schenk and
Kash Ayuso got their offensive game going in the second quarter. Schenk hit two threes in the quarter while Ayuso went 2-of-5 from the floor as they each scored seven points. PBA held Bowie State below 25 percent shooting in the second while they shot 6-of-13 themselves. The only issue the Sailfish really had during the game was handling the Bulldog full-court pressure as they committed 18 turnovers on the game while forcing just six. The Sailfish controlled all other aspects of the game as they led 37-24 at the half.
Six different Sailfish scored in the third quarter as four different PBA players finished in double figures. The Bulldogs were led by Anii Harris who scored a game-high 31 points, but PBA was able to shut down the other offensive options from Bowie State. The game turned into a free throw contest in the second half as both sides went to the line over 20 times each. The 'Fish took advantage shooting 77 percent while the Bulldogs shot 53 percent from the charity stripe.
Fletcher and
Ashleigh Boulin continue to dominate down low for the Sailfish, as Boulin finished with 11 points and Fletcher scored 21 points and pulled down 18 rebounds as she recorded another double-double. Ayuso filled the stat sheet, scoring 17 points while recording six assists and six rebounds. Schenk led the Sailfish from behind the line as she made 3-of-4 three-pointers and the team shot 7-of-16 from deep.
The Sailfish are back in action tomorrow where they will face Shaw University. The Bears are 5-4 on the season and playing hosts Lynn this afternoon.
