BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team played its second game in as many days today as they faced Shaw. The Sailfish controlled the game from the tip and dominated the Bears to a 76-46 victory. PBA's record jumps back above .500 overall and they are now 6-5.
The Sailfish have solidified their defensive efforts over the last few games which has resulted in three blowout victories where they held their opponents well below 40 percent shooting. That continued early today as PBA held Shaw to just ten points in the opening quarter as the Bears shot 4-of-16 from the floor. On the other end, the 'Fish built off their strong defensive work and shot 60 percent, scoring 20 points, in the quarter. Five different Sailfish hit a basket, led by
Claire Davis who had a quick five points off the bench as PBA held a 20-10 lead.
The PBA shooting cooled off slightly in the second quarter as they dropped below 40 percent but the Sailfish built on their lead as they outscored Shaw 19-11 in the second. The 'Fish were able to defend without sending the Bears to the free throw line and controlled the paint as PBA out-rebounded their opponents 25-14 in the first half. The Sailfish led 39-21 at the half, led by Davis who had ten points.
Already in control of the game, the 'Fish pulled away for good in the third quarter.
Kash Ayuso and
Mariyah Fletcher took on the heavy lifting of the Sailfish offense as they scored nine and eight points respectively in the quarter. PBA went 9-of-18 from the field while holding the Bears to 26 percent shooting and PBA winning the quarter 21-11.
Nine different PBA players scored on the afternoon led by Ayuso who finished with 16 points. She added seven assists and four rebounds while down low Fletcher recorded a second-straight double-double with 14 points and rebounds. Davis scored 12 points off the bench while
Darria Whitley had eight points.
Ashleigh Boulin continues to be a strong pairing with Fletcher in the paint as she finished today with nine points and 12 rebounds. The only negative was the 21 turnovers for the Sailfish but they continue to shoot the ball well of late as they shot 30-of-66 today and 8-of-22 from three.
The Sailfish will get a holiday break to recharge as they won't return to action again until Dec. 30. They will head to Lakeland to take on a Florida Southern side that has a 7-3 record but is 0-3 in Sunshine State Conference play.
