Sailfish Tame Wildcats In Thanksgiving Victory

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team returned to action this afternoon as they took on Daemen College on a neutral floor at Nova Southeastern. After a big second quarter, the Sailfish led the rest of the way as they captured the 63-52 victory to move their record to 3-1 on the season and drop the Wildcats to 3-2.

A low-scoring opening half started with PBA outscoring the Wildcats 11-10 in the opening ten minutes. Five different Sailfish scored in the opening quarter, led by Kash Ayuso who scored four of her game-high 18. Each side struggled with some turnovers in the quarter but the 'Fish controlled the glass to gain a small advantage early.

PBA came out and dominated the second quarter by holding the Wildcats without a point for nearly five minutes. Daemen shot just 2-of-12 in the second as PBA countered with 8-of-17 from the field. 8 different Sailfish scored in the half as a balanced attack had PBA up 31-18 after 20 minutes of play.

Jillian Schenk and Claire Davis played strong in the third quarter as they scored six and five points respectively to help PBA extend their lead. They each finished the game in double figures along with Ayuso. The Sailfish controlled play around the basket as they outscored Daemen in the paint and outrebounded their opponents 47 to 27 in the game led by Mariyah Fletcher who pulled down 14 on her own. The 'Fish won the third quarter 18-17 and were in command, leading by 14 heading to the final quarter.

Outside of 22 turnovers by the Sailfish, it was a solid performance offensively, especially in the middle two quarters. The Sailfish outshot Daemen 40 percent to 34 percent from the floor and 31 percent to 25 percent from three.

The Sailfish have a quick turnaround as they are back in action tomorrow against Purdue Northwest. The Lions are coming off an 80-46 defeat to hosts Nova Southeastern today.
