WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team celebrated senior night on Friday night with a match against SSC foe Eckerd.
The Sailfish honored graduate student
Jayden Otto before the match as the lone senior. With emotions running high on senior night, the Sailfish got off to a hot start against the Tritons. PBA took the first two sets and looked poise to cruise to victory. EC refused to roll over, bouncing back to take the third and fourth sets. Things looked bleak for PBA as the visitors led 14-11 in the fifth set. PBA took six of the last seven points in the match to win the set 17-15 and escape with a win.
Anna Beth Stokes and
Abbie Zylstra tied for a team-high 15 kills. A. Stokes hit .270 with 18 digs and two blocks. Zylstra hit .231 with 13 digs of her own.
Mary Morgan Formby notched 10 digs with four blocks.
Kaileigh Ammons tallied nine kills, hitting .400 with three blocks. Otto recorded 45 assists with 18 digs.
Payton Ahrenstorff dug up 12 balls with four service aces.
The Sailfish came from behind to win a close first set. Both teams' offenses started slowly, each hitting under .200 in the set. PBA took a 1-0 lead after taking the first set, 25-22. The 'Fish turned it up a notch in the second set. PBA hit .400 in the second, gaining a big lead early and never looking back, winning 25-18.
Eckerd slowed down the Sailfish attack in the third set. PBA hit .158 as EC won 25-21. Despite outhitting the Tritons, .280 - .242 in the fourth set, EC still came out on top 25-20 to force a fifth set.
A 5-0 run in the fifth set included two kills from Zylstra and back-to-back aces from Ahrenstorff allowing PBA to build an 11-8 lead. Eckerd answered with a 6-0 run of its own that included a ball-handling error from PBA and an ace for the Tritons. EC led 14-11 before a kill and block from Ammons kickstarted a 6-1 run for the 'Fish that sealed the 17-15 win for PBA.
The Sailfish play their final home match on Saturday against Saint Leo. The match in Rubin Arena Starts at 4 p.m.
