WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team battled the visiting Rollins College Tars in Rubin Arena on Friday night.
The Sailfish looked to build off Tuesday's big win over Lynn. Rollins started hot, catching PBA off guard. After Rollins took the first set, the Tars held on to win a close second set 25-23. Rollins closed out the match in three sets.
Mary Morgan Formby led the Sailfish with 10 kills, hitting an efficient .381.
Taylor Nelson and
Abbie Zylstra finished with eight kills each. Nelson hit .222 with six digs while Zylstra totaled four digs. Middles
Kaileigh Ammons and
Harper Stokes recorded five kills each.
Jayden Otto dished out 30 assists with three digs.
Payton Ahrenstorff led the 'Fish with eight digs.
Rollins started the match on a 12-2 run to seize momentum early. Serve receive plagued the 'Fish as RC tallied five aces in the set. The Tars hit a match-best .346 in the opening set, winning 25-15.
The Sailfish regrouped in the second set and got Formby heavily involved in the attack. Four kills from her early in the set helped give PBA a 16-14 lead. Rollins took advantage of two unforced errors from the Sailfish and a trio of Tars kills, giving the visitors a 21-18 lead. A kill from Nelson and two errors by the Tars tied the set at 21. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, Rollins came out on top of a close set, 25-23.
PBA held another lead midway through the third set, but the Rollins attack caught fire again, allowing the Tars to gain a 19-16 lead. Two blocks from Zylstra and a block from Stokes cut the deficit to one, but the Tars closed the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-21.
Rollins outhit the Sailfish .286 - .183. The 'Fish totaled 12 unforced attack errors and surrendered nine service aces.
PBA competes again on Saturday, facing SSC foe Florida Tech. The match at Rubin Arena takes place at 4 p.m.
