TAMPA, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team hit the road tonight for a Sunshine State Conference clash against the Tampa Spartans. After 89 minutes of scoreless action, the Sailfish found the breakthrough in the final minute to earn the 1-0 victory. The win takes PBA's record to 4-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.
A somewhat lackluster opening half from a neutral standpoint where neither side was able to create many chances and the game was played in the midfield resulting in a 0-0 scoreline at the half. The two sides combined for seven shots and PBA goalie
Salvador Plaza made the lone save of the half.Â
Plaza was the star for the Sailfish early in the second half as he made multiple saves right on the doorstep. He deflected a Spartans shot on the crossbar which PBA was able to clear out of danger and minutes later he came out strong to gather a cross under pressure from the Spartans forward. From that point forward, the Sailfish were able to get their offense going as they outshot Tampa 8-5 in the second half.
PBA was pushing forward in the closing moments, looking to steal all three points that come with a victory and a huge opportunity presented itself when a Sailfish was fouled in the box attacking a free kick by the Tampa goalie. The referee awarded a penalty with less than a minute remaining. With the game hanging in the balance,
Yannick Toth stepped up to the penalty spot and put his shot past a Spartans keeper who dove the correct direction. The goal marks Toth's third of the year and his second penalty as the Sailfish escaped with a 1-0 victory and a huge three-point result towards the SSC standings.
The Sailfish return home to host Florida Southern this Saturday at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The Mocs are 4-2-5 on the season and coming off a 2-2 non-conference draw against Georgia Southwestern tonight.
