Sailfish Offense Explodes In Second Half to Down Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team returned to action tonight after a week off and took on the Rollins College Tars on the road. The Sailfish took over in the second half to move to 6-2 on the season and 2-2 in Sunshine State Conference play.

PBA needed a win in a big way to stop a rare two-game skid that saw the Sailfish fall from No. 2 in the country to out of the rankings. The Sailfish and the Tars played out an even opening half with neither side creating many quality chances throughout the opening 45 minutes of play. The 'Fish were able to get All-American defender Michael Pahr back for his first full game action and his presence was needed after PBA had allowed seven goals in their last two games.

The chances did come tonight until late in the first half. In the 38th minute, PBA keeper Guillermo Falo came up with a huge save in a one-on-one situation to keep the game scoreless. A minute later, the 'Fish had their best chance as Pahr got on the end of a set piece free-kick but his header was denied by the crossbar. The two sides went into the break scoreless with both teams just recording one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

As few chances as there were in the opening half, the two sides made up for it in the second half. The Sailfish got on the board first in the 53rd minute Giancarlo Dostilio found a streaking Niall Owens into the left side of the box. Owens was able to put his left-footed shot past the Tars keeper to put PBA ahead. Rollins was able to answer just three minutes later as they got behind the Sailfish backline and Falo was unable to make a save.

The Sailfish were able to handle the adversity and had a quick response of their own. In the 59th minute, Dostilio found himself isolated on the right wing. He cut inside onto his left foot and beat the keeper to the near post to put the Sailfish ahead for good. PBA put the game away in the 64th minute when Harry Gardner scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Midfielder Yannick Toth received the ball inside the box from Dostilio and his shot rattled off the Tars keeper's chest and Gardner was there to put home the rebound.

The Sailfish were outshot in the game 16-11 but PBA had more shots on goal 6-4. Falo was called on to make three saves to hold the Tars to the lone goal. The Sailfish have another full week to recover and game plan for their next match where they will host Eckerd on Oct. 1 at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
