LAKELAND, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team returned to action for the first time in two weeks as they traveled to take on the Florida Southern College Moccasins. The Sailfish fell behind early through a penalty in the opening half before equalizing and dominating the run of play. The Sailfish were unable to break through as the game ended 1-1 and the Sailfish record moves to 6-2-1 and 2-2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.
The Sailfish controlled the majority of the play in the opening 45 minutes, as they had 62 percent of the possession and outshot the Mocs 6-3. Neither side was able to create a great scoring chance in the opening 20 minutes of play, but the first chance came to the home side in the 21st minute of play. An FSC long ball was chased down by the Mocs in the PBA box and Sailfish defender
Aaron Ibe made a sliding attempt on the ball. He brought down the Florida Southern attacker and the referee awarded a penalty kick which was converted to give the Mocs the lead.
The Sailfish were able to answer just ten minutes later as
Harrison Ardron was brought down just outside the Mocs box. The Sailfish had an argument for a red card as Ardron was behind the last defender when the foul occurred and had a scoring chance but a yellow was given. However, the 'Fish still took advantage of the chance as
Yannick Toth bent the ensuing freekick into the bottom right corner of the goal. The two sides went into the halftime break tied 1-1.
The second half was completely controlled by the Sailfish as they came forward time after time in the opening 15 minutes, creating multiple looks at goal but failing to find a second goal. In the 61st minute, the Mocs had a player receive his second yellow card of the game and was sent off, allowing PBA to play man-up for the final 30 minutes. The 'Fish had plenty of possession on the edge of the Mocs box but a clear-cut scoring chance never really came. The frustration grew as PBA was unable to break through and resulted in
Niall Owens receiving a yellow card for diving in the box and a second for arguing the call in the 84th minute.
With each side down to ten players, PBA still controlled the pace of play for the final minutes but a couple
Federico Serra shots were blocked or saved. PBA outshot the Mocs 14-5 in the game but was held to a 1-1 draw. The Sailfish have a quick turnaround as they will host Embry-Riddle on Oct. 12 at the Rinker Athletic Campus.
