Sailfish Drop Second Straight Conference Clash to Spartans

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team hosted Sunshine State Conference rival Tampa tonight at the Rinker Athletic Campus. Having a quick turnaround after playing on Wednesday, the Sailfish fell to the Spartans 3-1 to move their record to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in SSC play.

The Sailfish looked to bounce back from their first defeat of the season tonight. The No. 2 ranked 'Fish got off to a quicker start than they did on Wednesday, but they were unable to break through in the opening half of play. The two sides played a back-and-forth in the opening 40 minutes of play without either side getting a great scoring opportunity. PBA controlled most of the possession, but much of the game was played in the midfield. The first real chance came to the Spartans in the 41st minute as they had a breakaway down the left side. The Tampa striker cut back onto his right foot and bent a shot around Sailfish keeper Guillermo Falo to open the scoring.

The Sailfish trailed at the half for the third-straight match, but they were quick to answer out of the halftime locker room. Fred Ferreira played a ball into Nemanja Zivanovic at the top of the box and he laid it off to Harry Gardner whose right-footed shot found the top-right corner of the net to tie the game 1-1 in the 52nd minute. The goal for Gardner is his team-leading fourth on the year. It appeared PBA was back into the game, but they were unable to threaten a serious scoring chance again.

A high cross from the Spartans was misplayed by Falo and ended up in the back of the net in the 65th minute to put Tampa back ahead, and they went forward to end the game in the 70th minute with their third goal. The Sailfish outshot the Spartans 18-15 in the contest but were able to muster five shots on target. The Spartans only had six on target but three found their way into the net as they walked away with the 3-1 victory.

The Sailfish have a week to recover and find the form again that made them a top-5 side. They will be presented with a tough opponent as they travel to face Rollins College, who is a top-10 team in the country next Saturday.
