Sailfish Comeback Comes Up Short Versus Saint Leo

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team dropped its first SSC game to the Saint Leo Lions 3-2 on Saturday night. The Sailfish dropped to 1-4-1 on the season. Emma Canty and Wilma Ritzen scored their first goals of the season.

The Sailfish out shot the Lions 7-5 in the first half. Saint Leo got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute. SLU's Alex Collighan received the ball on a breakaway and scored to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. With just under five minutes left in the first half, the game paused due to a lightning delay. The match resumed and Saint Leo held their 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half the Lions built up their lead. In the 64th minute, SLU capitalized on a corner kick opportunity. The ensuing corner kick landed around a scrum of bodies near the net. SLU's Alicia Hills finished the ball in for a SLU 2-0 lead.

The games deciding goal came in the 68th minute. The Sailfish committed a foul in the box. The Lions made most of the penalty opportunity as Nina Mueller buried in the shot for an 3-0 Saint Leo lead.

Down 3-0 in the second half, the Sailfish generated offense. In the 86th minute Canty crashed the left side of the goal and kicked the ball into the lower right side of the net. The Sailfish weren't done as they added another goal in the 89th minute. Marina Leal passed the ball to Wilma Ritzen in stride. Ritzen kicked a lazer to the left side of the net. For Leal, it marked her first assist of the season.

With time winding down, the Sailfish couldn't find an equalizer and the game ended 3-2 Saint Leo.

Taylor Jackson made her first start in net for the Sailfish this season. The Florida native recorded three saves.

Next, the Sailfish travel to Miami Shores for a conference match against Barry on Wednesday, Sep. 14.
