Softball Drops Series-Opener to NSU

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team began its series against Nova Southeastern on Thursday.

Cambria Arturo pitched a stellar game in the circle. She pitched a complete game, surrendering just one run. Unfortunately, she lacked run support from her offense. Nova Southeastern held the Sailfish scoreless, and the lone run scored by the Sharks was enough to pick up the win in game one of the series. Nova Southeastern took the game, 1-0.

The Sailfish outhit the Sharks, 6-3 in the game. Briana Rodriguez and Hayley Haas led the 'Fish with two hits each. Arturo surrendered just three hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

PBA had action early in the first inning. Daylin Hejtmanek led off the game with a walk. A fielder's choice, followed by a walk from Meredith Milam, and a passed ball gave the 'Fish runners on second and third. NSU got out of the jam with a popout and a strikeout.

The 'Fish mustered runners on base in the second and third innings but failed to put together a rally. NSU broke through against Arturo in the fourth inning. A leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on second with one out. The Sharks tripled down the right-field line, just out of the reach of the PBA right-fielder, allowing NSU to take a 1-0 lead.

PBA tried to answer in the fifth. The Sailfish recorded three hits in the inning, but a double play and a flyout ended the inning for the Sailfish. Maura Glatczak led off the seventh with a single for the 'Fish, but PBA was set down in order after her at-bat to end the game with NSU winning, 1-0.

The Sailfish play two more against the Sharks tomorrow. The first pitch of game one in Ft. Lauderdale takes place at 2 p.m.
