Tars Steal Two Games in Doubleheader Matchup Against Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic's baseball team took on #14 ranked Rollins College in a doubleheader to finish off their three-game Sunshine State Conference series. The games were tightly contested, but the Sailfish unfortunately dropped both games 11-7 and 12-9.

The first game of the doubleheader was almost a repeat of Friday night's game. With two outs in the third inning, a fielding error by the Sailfish defense allowed a run to score and set up a two-run home run, making the score 3-0. The Sailfish would battle back in the fourth and fifth innings with two RBI hits from Mikey Casaleggio and Jiovel Lantigua to even the score at 5-5.

In the seventh inning, it looked as though the Sailfish would pull away. Davis Blair would double to get the inning started and would later be brought in to score by Matty Warren. A Rollins error got Lantigua on base and allowed Warren to coast across home plate. A wild pitch from the Tars would get Lantigua in to score and give PBA an 8-5 lead going into the late innings.

The Tars would swing the game back in their favor in the eighth inning by scoring two crucial runs. A wild pitch by Rollins in the bottom half of the eighth would allow the Sailfish to tie the game again heading into the final inning of regulation play. Neither side could come up with any runs in the ninth, so the game would extend into extras.

The 10th inning was all Rollins. Three walks from PBA set up the Tars to do some damage as they scored four runs from two clutch hits. The Sailfish would try to make something happen in the bottom half of the inning, but were only able to manage one hit, losing the game 11-7.

The first inning of the second game is one that the Sailfish would like to forget. Rollins began the game with three straight hits from the top of their batting order, including a three-run home run. A fly ball out to center field would score one more run to make the score 4-0 in the early goings.

PBA would stay resilient, scoring a combined five runs in the third and fourth inning. The Sailfish turned things on in the sixth inning to take a big lead over Rollins for the second time today. Lantigua and Nate Housen notched RBI hits, followed up by a run from Sean Houck after a Rollins pick-off error. Casaleggio capped off the inning with an RBI single to left field that scored Housen. The 'Fish jumped out to a massive lead off of that run, leading 9-4.

Those would be the final runs of the game for the Sailfish as Rollins exploded for eight runs combined in the last three innings. Some careless errors by the 'Fish as well as clutch hitting from the Tars led to the second blown PBA lead of the day. Rollins would complete the clean SSC sweep, winning the final game 12-9.

PBA will play again on Mar. 22 at home in a south region matchup against Barry University.
