WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team started a key Sunshine State Conference series against Rollins on Friday night.
Rollins (13-5, 4-3 SSC) entered today's game tied with the Sailfish for second in the conference standings. PBA (10-11, 9-4 SSC) set the tone for the series, getting ahead early and staying ahead. Four quick runs were plenty of run support for
Cambria Arturo who tossed a complete game, winning 4-2.
The matchup started with a bang as
Meredith Milam sent a lead-off home run over the left-field fence to give PBA an immediate 1-0 lead.
Katherine Budnovich almost made it back-to-back homers, but her hit to left-center hit off the top of the fence and bounced back in for a double. She was stranded on second to end the top of the first.
After retiring the first two batters of the game, Arturo surrendered a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning. The junior regrouped and forced a groundout to get out of the jam.
The Sailfish did damage with two outs in the bottom of the second. With
Briana Rodriguez on second,
Daylin Hejtmanek singled through the right side to put runners on second and third as the lineup turned over. Milam singled to left field to score Rodriguez, and Budnovich followed with a two-RBI triple to score Hejtmanek and Milam to give PBA a 4-0 lead.
Rollins got one run back courtesy of a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning for the Tars. Arturo bounced back to set down the next three batters and end the inning. Budnovich singled to lead off the fifth for PBA, but the Sailfish stranded a pair of runners on base to keep the game at 4-1.
The Tars tried to stay alive in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, a PBA throwing error on a bunt allowed a runner to make their way to third. The Tars scored one run on a sacrifice fly, but Arturo finished the game to seal the 4-2 win.
Milam and Budnovich led the Sailfish offense with three hits each. Budnovich was approximately 10 feet short of hitting for the cycle. In the seventh inning, she sent a deep flyball to centerfield, but the Rollins fielder made a leaping catch at the warning track. The pair totaled two RBIs each with Milam scoring two runs. Hejtmanek tallied two hits in the game. The trio accounted for eight of PBA's 10 hits. Arturo pitched seven innings, giving up one earned run on five hits.
The Sailfish wrap up against the Tars tomorrow with a day doubleheader. The first pitch of game one takes place at 1 p.m.
