MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team traveled to face Barry on Wednesday night.
PBA looked to avenge a close home loss against the Bucs from earlier in the season. Barry entered today's game receiving votes in the NABC top-25. The Sailfish came back from a first-half deficit to tie the game at 63 with seven minutes to go. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, Barry caught fire after the under-eight media timeout. The Bucs closed the game on a 26-9 run, converting on 10 of their last 14 attempts to win 89-72.
Alexander Gorton continued his impressive stretch of games. He scored a team-high 22 points with nine rebounds and two steals. This was his fifth consecutive game with at least 15 points scored.
Jules Jasmin put up 17 points with five rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.
Marcus Montalvo scored nine points with five rebounds and four assists.
Aleksa Rakic scored eight points and four rebounds in his return to the starting lineup.
The Sailfish hung with the Bucs through the first 10 minutes of play. Barry took a quick 11-4 lead by forcing some PBA turnovers, but the 'Fish tied it at 14 after six points from Gorton, a 3-pointer by Jasmin, and a made free throw from
Jalen Cooper. PBA forced the Bucs into its fair share of turnovers, causing 14 miscues by the hosts in the first half resulting in 11 points off turnovers. Barry gained an advantage on the boards in the first half, outrebounding PBA 23-13 in the period, with nine second-chance points.
PBA began to make its second-half push with 13 minutes left to play. The 'Fish trailed 58-47, but an old-fashioned 3-point play from Jasmin sparked a 16-5 run to tie the game at 63. Just as PBA seized the momentum, Barry grabbed it right back by knocking down a pair of threes and scoring some more second-chance points. PBA converted one of its last eight field-goal attempts as Barry won 89-72.
The Sailfish won the turnover margin, but the Bucs grabbed 50 rebounds compared to 35 for PBA. Those offensive rebounds resulted in six more second-chance points. PBA shot just 37 percent for the game while Barry shot 44 percent from the field.
PBA returns home this weekend to host Embry-Riddle on Saturday. The game at Rubin Arena tips off at 4:00 p.m.
