ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team hit the road today to play one of the premier programs in the Sunshine State Conference in Eckerd College this afternoon. The Sailfish were unable to get their offense going in a low-scoring affair against the No. 12 ranked Tritons as they fell 60-39.
The Sailfish got off to a slow start in the opening quarter today being outscored by the Tritons 19-9. PBA was 4-of-15 from the field and 1-of-5 from three while Eckerd countered with 7-of-18 from the field.
Shekinah Guthrie continued her impressive play as of late as she scored six of the nine points in the opening quarter.
The 'Fish played the Tritons even 10-10 in the second ten minutes of play. PBA still struggled from the floor but were able to get to the free-throw line and convert 6-of-8 attempts. Guthrie once again led PBA in the quarter with another six points and
Jahnae Midget scored four off the bench. The Tritons had the lead up to 16 in the quarter, but PBA continued to battle as they closed the quarter on a 6-0 run and trailed 29-19.
The Sailfish were able to muster 13 points in the third quarter as they went 3-of-10 from the field but once again took advantage of their trips to the line, going 7-for-9. Eckerd scored 20 points in the quarter to build on their ten-point halftime lead.
Kamryn Estell was the leading scorer in the quarter for PBA as she scored four points. Both sides struggled from the field in the final quarter as the two sides combined to score 18 points on 5-of-27 shooting. However, the Sailfish were unable to cut into the double-digit lead at any point after the opening two minutes in the second half.
Guthrie carried the load offensively for PBA as she finished the game with a game-high 19 points while the rest of the team combined to score 20.
Sia Williams added six and Midget five points as the second and third-leading scorers. Eckerd was firing away from three as they converted on 8-of-35 attempts, 22.9 percent, while PBA really struggled from deep, going 1-for-20. Both sides were a little sloppy with the ball as PBA turned it over 27 times and the Tritons 21 times.
The Sailfish will be back in action on Feb. 9 when they head to face the Barry Buccaneers on the road. The Sailfish fell 61-52 in the team's previous matchup.
