MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's basketball team played its second straight road game as they traveled south to face the Barry Buccaneers. The Sailfish offense struggled to create against a stout Barry defense as PBA fell 69-53.
The 'Fish came out in the first quarter and were 5-of-17 from the floor in the opening ten minutes of play. Starting point guard
Maria Benitez-Zayas led the Sailfish offensively with an early four points on 2-of-4 shooting. The Bucs countered with 17 points of their own on 47 percent shooting and connecting on 3-of-4 three-pointers.
Offense has been hard to come by for the Sailfish of late, particularly without the services of leading scoring
Kash Ayuso. In her place, forward
Shekinah Guthrie has picked up the slack averaging nearly 18 points and nine rebounds over the past three games. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, she didn't have her best shooting performance, going 4-of-13 from the field and finishing with eight points and six boards. As usual, she was able to stuff the stat sheet with two assists, one block, and four steals. PBA was able to muster just 11 points in the second quarter, but solid defense limited the Bucs to 15, but they held a 32-23 halftime lead.
Barry created a cushion in the second half as they continued to shoot the ball well from deep, going 12-of-20 from three on the night. PBA was able to hit on 4-of-17 from behind the arc for the game as the deficit grew to 17 at the end of the third quarter. The 'Fish had their best offensive quarter in the fourth as they scored 17 points on 50 percent shooting but they struggled with turnovers as they committed six of their 20 in the game.
Sia Williams finished as the leading scorer for PBA with nine points on 3-of-8 shooting, while Guthrie and Benitez-Zayas each finished with eight points. Center
Kamryn Estell was able to put in six points inside while
Jahnae Midget continues to be a spark off the bench with seven points and
Courtni Demorest added two threes and finished with six. PBA finished shooting 18-58 from the field while defensively they were able to force 25 Barry turnovers, but the Bucs shot 48 percent on the night.
The Sailfish will look to get back on track this Saturday when they return to Rubin Arena to face Embry-Riddle. The Eagles currently carry a 10-10 record on the season and are 8-7 in SSC play.
