MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team played its final road game of the regular season on Wednesday night at Florida Tech.
The Sailfish held an early lead against the Panthers, but PBA (7-18, 7-12 SSC) failed to withstand the barrage of 3-point buckets by the hosts. Florida Tech (12-12, 6-13 SSC) hit 13 of its 29 attempts from beyond the arc to hold off the 'Fish, 76-64.
Jules Jasmin led the PBA offense with 20 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Will Lee finished with 12 points with four assists and three rebounds.
Alexander Gorton recorded his eighth straight game with double-digit points, scoring 11 points with seven rebounds and two steals.
Jalen Cooper tallied eight points and eight boards.
Nate Ward added seven points and two steals off the bench for PBA.
The Sailfish started the game energetically on the defensive end, holding the Panthers to just six points on two made shots through the first 10 minutes of action, giving PBA an early 15-6 lead. The Panther offense awoke with seven minutes to go in the period. With the 'Fish leading 19-13, FT rattled off a 19-5 run with three 3-pointers in a six-minute span to take a 32-24 lead with a minute to go in the half. Buckets from Gorton and Cooper stopped the bleeding before the half with FT leading 34-28 at the break.
PBA quickly regained its lead at the start of the second half. The 'Fish started the half on a 6-0 run, including a layup by
Jakob Hester and a pair of buckets from Jasmin. The two teams traded leads until an 18-4 run by the hosts beginning at the nine-minute mark, including four 3-pointers which gave FT a 65-54 lead. The Sailfish were unable to recover as Florida Tech won the contest 76-64.
While the Panthers got their 3-point attempts to fall, the Sailfish hit six of their 27 attempts from deep in the game. The Sailfish won the turnover battle forcing 13 Panther turnovers resulting in 17 points off turnovers. Rebounding played a big part in tonight's matchup. Florida Tech won the battle of the boards, 51-34. FT grabbed 17 offensive rebounds which led to 16 second-chance points.
Tonight's results had a big impact on the Sunshine State Conference standings. The Sailfish are now tied in seventh place in the standings with Saint Leo. Florida Tech sits one game back from the Lions and the Sailfish with one game to play.
The battle for a berth to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament takes place on Saturday. PBA hosts Tampa on senior day. The game at Rubin Arena tips off at 4 p.m.
