WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team hosted SSC foe, Florida Southern, on Saturday afternoon.
After dropping the opening set, the Sailfish regrouped and won three consecutive sets to win the match, 3-1. PBA (9-7, 4-5 SSC) continues its winning streak against the Mocs (8-7, 3-5 SSC) that haven't beaten the Sailfish in volleyball since 2018.
Abbie Zylstra led PBA with 14 kills and nine digs.
Kaileigh Ammons totaled 11 kills, hitting .360 with four aces and four blocks.
Kayla Matthews reached eight kills and seven digs.
Anna Gregerson totaled six kills, hitting .385 with a block.
Jayden Otto recorded 30 assists, 18 digs, and four blocks.
Lauren Cummings totaled 11 digs as libero.
The Mocs pulled away in the middle of the first set after several service aces. The Sailfish came out a little flat as FSC made a statement to begin the match. The visitors won the first set, 25-16.
Zylstra and Formby helped develop a Sailfish lead in the second set. PBA pulled away to a 19-13 lead in the second half thanks to unforced errors by the Mocs and an ace by Cummings. A kill from Ammons followed by three errors by the FSC setter gave the 'Fish a 23-15 advantage. A kill by Formby closed out a 25-17 set win for the 'Fish.
Ammons, Zylstra, and Matthews helped the 'Fish pull away in the second set. A 5-0 run put PBA ahead 12-7. Unforced errors from FSC allowed the Sailfish to take a 19-13 lead. The Mocs battled back to cut the deficit to three but kills by Formby, Gregerson, and Ammons slammed the door on a 25-18 win.
Most of the fourth set was tightly contested as FSC strived to stay alive. Kills from Zylstra, Matthews, and Ammons helped PBA pull away to a 14-9 lead. The Mocs stormed back with a 6-0 run with three aces to take a 15-14 lead. The teams traded leads as the set required extra points to decide it. With the set tied at 25, a kill from Ammons and a block from Otto and Ammons clinched a 27-25 win to secure the match for the 'Fish.
Florida Southern totaled 25 unforced errors in the match. The attack from both squads were even with PBA hitting .216 as a team compared to .216 for Florida Southern.
The Sailfish travel to Birmingham, Ala. next weekend for the GSC Crossover. PBA's opponents for the tournament have yet to be announced. Stay tuned to pbasailfish.com for updates.
