Volleyball Shocked by Lions

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team continued its streak of road games on Saturday against Saint Leo.

The Sailfish sought to complete the season sweep of the Lions, having defeated Saint Leo (11-14, 4-10 SSC) in five sets on Sept. 23. PBA (12-13, 6-9 SSC) entered the match coming off a tough five-set loss at Florida Tech on Friday night. The Sailfish sputtered again on Saturday, losing to the Lions in three sets.

Kayla Matthews led the Sailfish with 11 kills, hitting .242 with four digs. Anna Gregerson recorded eight kills, hitting a team-best .333 with two blocks. Harper Stokes tallied seven kills and three blocks. Lauren Cummings led the Sailfish defense with 12 digs. Jayden Otto finished with a team-high 26 assists and seven digs.

The Sailfish jumped to an early lead in the opening set. Angeleyshka Curbelo got the start on the outside and worked with Matthews and Gregerson to build an 11-6 lead for PBA. The Lions battled back to tie the set at 11. The Sailfish built a couple of three-point leads, but the Lions continued to hang around. PBA seemed poised to win the opening set after a kill from Gregerson made it 24-21. Saint Leo stole the set by going on a 6-1 run, winning 27-25.

The second set was all Saint Leo. The Lions hit .367 as a team on their way to a 25-14 win. PBA looked to come back from a 2-0 deficit, as it did the night before. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, there was no magic in the cards on Saturday. A 6-0 run by the Lions late in the third set included two aces and an unforced attack error, and put SLU ahead, 23-18. PBA fought back to make it 24-22, but Saint Leo closed out the set 25-22.

PBA takes a long road trip on Tuesday to face top 25-ranked Tampa. The match at Tampa starts at 8 p.m.
