SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team defeated the Saint Leo Lions 2-1 on Saturday night. PBA (5-1, 2-0 SSC) has won four matches in row. This marks the longest winning streak for the program since 2013.
In the first half of the match, PBA showed a stout defense which prevented the Lions from taking a single shot attempt in the first 45 minutes. In the 31st minute, the Sailfish would capitalize off a corner kick.
Sydney Timmes delivered the crisp corner to
Kylie Meola who beat the Lions' keeper with a header to give the Sailfish a 1-0 lead. The senior to senior connection produced Timmes' first assist along with Meola's third goal of the season.
With the 1-0 lead, PBA continued to smother any opportunity for the Lions offense. The Sailfish took the slim lead into halftime.
The scoring wasn't done for the Sailfish as they struck again in the 58th minute. PBA midfielder
Halie Reznik found freshman
Marina Leal near the net. Leal's shot hit the left side of the net. The assist was Reznik's first of the year. Leal's second goal of the season built the Sailfish lead to 2-0.
SLU's offense was more lively in the second half. A Sailfish handball in the 70th minute resulted in a penalty kick for the Lions. SLU midfielder Nina Mueller drove the ball off her right foot and found the left side net. With the score at 2-1, the game had no shortage of drama as
Kelly Giddes received a red card in the 79th minute. Despite being a man down PBA stood tall in the final 10 minutes. In the 84th minute, SLU took three consecutive corner kicks, but failed to capitalize on them.
PBA secured the 2-1 road victory. Goalkeeper
Rachel Neumann finished the game with one save, and offensively PBA out-shot SLU 15-5.
The Sailfish return home to take on the University of Tampa on Saturday Oct. 2nd.
