WEST PALM BEACH. Fla- The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team beat the University of Tampa 2-1 Saturday night. The victory marks the first time the Sailfish have beaten the Spartans in program history. Additionally, PBA extended its win-streak to five, which is its most since 2012 and moves to 6-1 on the season.
The first half featured stagnant offense on both sides. In the 19th minute Tampa forward Madison McElhone made a deep run and shot at the net. PBA goalkeeper
Rachel Neumann prevented the goal with a diving save. Neumann finished the game with six saves between the posts.
With under three minutes left in the first half, it appeared like the 'Fish got the break through they had been looking for. PBA freshmen
Angel Shamba got on the end of a
Serena D'Anna cross and her left left-footed volley found the top left side of the net. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the goal was waved off due to offsides. The Spartans out-shot the Sailfish 6-4 in the first half, but tight defense on both sides lead to a 0-0 halftime score.
The second-half scoring frenzy started in the 58th minute when the Sailfish broke the seal.
Nicole Richards delivered a perfect cross to
Kylie Meola in front of the net. She was able to settle the ball near the penalty spot and her right-footed shot found the back of the net. Meola's team-leading fourth goal of the season put PBA up 1-0 while the assist was Richard's first of the year. The Sailfish were not done finding the net, as in the 68th minute, PBA midfielder D'Anna had the ball on the perimeter of the box. With a tough angle on the right-side of the box, the freshmen from New Jersey launched the ball over the goalies head into the left corner of the net.
Neumann was forced to leave the game due to injury in the 71st minute, and PBA senior goalkeeper
Madison Chiola made her second appearance of the season. The Spartans would cut into their 2-0 deficit. In the 86th minute, Tampa freshmen forward Laken Gallman made a move into the box and drilled the right side of the net. The Spartans were down 2-1 with under five minutes to play. The Spartans threatened, kicking deep shots, but Chiola made two clutch saves down the stretch to secure the 2-1 win for the Sailfish.
The Sailfish now sit atop the SSC standings with a 3-0 conference record. Up next, the Sailfish will have a chance to redeem their lone loss of the year when they play Nova Southeastern on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at home.
