WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic women's soccer team pulled out a thrilling extra-time win against Delta State 2-1 on Friday night at PBA Soccer field. The win marks their second consecutive extra-time win at home.
The game started off with stifling defense on both ends. The Sailfish and Statesman combined for 6 total shots in the first half. The Sailfish put together a run in the 21st minute but couldn't capitalize as
Halie Reznik kicked a shot that was saved from DSU's goalkeeper Amanda Hilliard. Hilliard would finish the game with two saves.
The scoring frenzy would begin in the 71st minute when
Maddie McCarty crossed it in front of the net to senior midfielder
Kylie Meola. Meola connected on a header to give the Sailfish the 1-0 lead as she scored her first goal of the season.
Delta State wouldn't go away. In a back in forth battle the Statesman were able to generate a corner kick opportunity in the 80th minute. The corner bounced around in the box before it found sophomore Nicola Hauk in front of the net. Hauk's right-footed strike was the equalizer for DSU bringing the game to 1-1.
With a tied score late in the second half the intensity picked up but neither teams were able to generate many shot opportunities before the end of regulation. After 90 minutes the score was tied at 1-1 and the game headed to extra time. The Sailfish defense prevented DSU from taking a single shot attempt in extra time, and with ten minutes left in the second extra-time period the Sailfish attack was given an opportunity with a free kick on the edge of the box. The golden goal came in the 104th minute when senior midfielder
Sydney Timmes blasted the free kick off the goalkeepers fingers into the net. Timmes' game-winning goal was her first with the Sailfish while Rachel Neuman made her second start of the season, earning the win and recording one save in net.
Up next, PBA (2-1-0) will face Florida Memorial at home on Thursday, Sep. 6 at 6:00pm.
