Sailfish Softball Walks-Off on Senior Night

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team concluded the home portion of its schedule on Saturday night with two extra-inning games at Simpson Field against Florida Tech.

Both games were low scoring pitcher's duels; in fact both games were decided, 1-0. Florida Tech executed on some small ball to win game one after 10 innings of play. Game two went the way of the Sailfish who walked off in the bottom of the eighth inning to come away with a win on senior day after a Meredith Milam ground ball scored Briana Rodriguez to end it.

The Sailfish are scheduled to finish their season tomorrow at Florida Tech with another doubleheader. First pitch of game one in Melbourne is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Game One: FT 1, PBA 0

Abbey Busby took the circle for the final time at Simpson Field in game one. The senior lived up to her standards as she tossed nine scoreless innings. PBA started the game with two runners stranded on base in the first inning after a pair of walks. The Sailfish also had a chance to strike again in the sixth, but they stranded two more runners on base.

Busby did her part in the circle, holding FT to six hits. The lone Panther run came in the top of the 10th inning where a runner started on second base. A groundout moved the runner to third where she scored after a sacrifice fly. The Sailfish had runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to convert, ending the game with a 1-0 FT win.

Rodriguez and Dallas Watterson had the only two hits for the Sailfish in the game. Busby finished with no earned runs in 10 innings pitched with four strikeouts and two walks.

Game Two: PBA 1, FT 0

Cambria Arturo followed Busby's performance with an excellent one of her own. She helped  toss a combined shutout with 7.2 scoreless innings. The 'Fish started the game with a pair of runners stranded in the first inning. The did the same in the second inning, ending the frame with runners on first and second.

PBA had another opportunity in the fifth, with runners on first and second and one out, but the Sailfish were left scoreless. Arturo was cruising on the mound for most of the game, holding the Panthers to six hits. FT nearly took the lead in the top of the eighth, but Faith Allen's throw home from centerfield denied the Panthers their first run of the game and kept the contest scoreless.

The 'Fish finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the eighth. With Rodriguez starting on second, she advanced via a sacrifice bunt by Allen. She scored the very next batter thanks to Milam's groundball to the shortstop which was booted by the shortstop.

Arturo pitched 7.2 innings with three strikeouts and zero walks. Taylor Pennica got a crucial out when she entered in relief in the middle of the contest.
