MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – After starting the series with a convincing win yesterday, the Palm Beach Atlantic softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Barry on Saturday.
After holding the Bucs to just one hit and one run yesterday, the Sailfish hurt themselves by surrendering walks and committing defensive miscues. Barry (6-9, 4-8 SSC) took advantage by coming up with base hits in clutch situations. The hosts cruised to a 7-4 lead in game one in which they led the entire game. The Sailfish played catchup in game two as well. Two unearned runs made the difference as PBA (8-7, 7-5 SSC) fell 3-2.
The Sailfish will look to bounce back against Lynn on Wednesday. The first game at Simpson Field is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Game One: Barry 7, PBA 4
The Sailfish fell behind immediately in the first game as two walks followed by a home run gave Barry a quick 3-0 advantage before even making an out. Barry took a 4-0 lead in the second after a dreaded leadoff walk came back to bite the 'Fish.
PBA got on the board in the top of the fifth. With one out in the inning, a
Faith Allen double, followed by a single by
Briana Rodriguez gave PBA runners on first and third. Allen scored on an RBI-single by
Meredith Milam to make it a 4-1 ballgame. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, Barry answered with another three-run home run to make it a 7-1 deficit.
The Sailfish showed some fight in the top of the seventh. PBA loaded the bases to start the frame. A sacrifice fly by
Katherine Budnovich drove in Isabella Herenandez. A wild pitch allowed Allen to score to cut it to 7-3 Bucs.
Janie McCloskey drove in PBA's fourth run of the ballgame with an RBI single, but it was too little too late as a groundout sealed Barry's 7-4 win.
Despite losing by three runs, PBA outhit Barry 8-5 in the contest; however, the two long balls were the nail in the coffin for the 'Fish. Rodriguez and Milam led PBA with two hits each.
Cambria Arturo pitched six innings in the circle, surrendering four runs on four hits with two walks.
Game Two: Barry 3, PBA 2
PBA played from behind in game two after Barry took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a leadoff walk followed by two hits. Fielding errors costs the 'Fish mightily in the third inning. It seemed like
Abbey Busby was going to work her way out of another jam, but a throwing error scored two runs to give Barry a 3-0 lead.
The Sailfish left runners stranded on base in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but they were finally able to drive in a pair in the sixth inning. It was PBA who benefitted from the long ball as Milam homered to left field, scoring Budnovich.
PBA had runners on first and second in the seventh, but it was unable to complete the comeback, falling 3-2. Once again, the Sailfish outhit Barry in the game 7-5. Budnovich and Allen led the 'Fish with two hits each. Busby got credited with her first loss of the season. She pitched all six innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.
