MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team closed out a series against the Barry Buccaneers this afternoon in Miami Shores. After dropping the opening games of the series on Friday, the Sailfish fell in extra innings today to the Bucs 3-2.
Playing their fourth game in four days, the Sailfish opted to go with a bullpen game in the series finale. They first gave the ball to junior
Christian Horner who has been used in high leverage situations out of the pen so far this year. The Sailfish jumped out to an early lead when
Robert Fabelo led off the second innings with a homer to right-center field to give PBA the 1-0 lead. Horner cruised through the first two innings but got in trouble in the third innings as he surrendered three straight one-out singles as the Bucs equalized.
Horner's day was over in the 4th as he went 3.1 innings, scattering five hits while striking out four and surrendering one run.
Andrew Sieczkowski was the first man out of the pen for the 'Fish as pitching got the upper hand for both sides throughout the remainder of the contest. Neither side had more than one man reach base in an inning through the eighth as Barry starter Frank Gonzalez II went 8.0 innings, giving up four hits while striking out eight and the lone run coming from Fabelo's homerun.
PBA turned to
Troy Klemm as the third arm out of the pen after Sieczkowski's 3.1 no-hit innings and he looked impressive out of the pen. He went two clean innings in relief to give the Sailfish offense a chance to win the game late. PBA's best opportunity came in the top of the ninth as
Jake Roper and
Robert Fabelo singled back to back with one out but the Sailfish were unable to capitalize on the opportunity as they left six runners on base for the game.
After a 1,2,3 10th innings for both sides, the Sailfish finally broke the 1-1 deadlock in the top of the 11th as
Ramon Machado led off the innings with a double and scored on a
Jake Roper single. After finally taking the lead,
Ruiari Murphy was called upon to complete the save after he retired the first batter he faced in the 10th. Unfortunately for the Sailfish, the Bucs were up to the task in the bottom of the innings as a walk, single, and steal with one out were brought home on a David Vasquez single as the Bucs walked it off 3-2.
It was an even game between the two sides as each offense recorded eight hits. Machado, Fabelo, and Roper continued to be the hot bats in the Sailfish lineup as they all recorded multi-hit games. After the tough extra-inning defeat, the Sailfish are scheduled to compete next weekend against Lynn as they will play two on the road on Friday before hosting the Fighting Knights for two games on Saturday.
