WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic men's lacrosse team returned to action this afternoon for the first time in two weeks after multiple postponements as they faced off with the Rollins Tars. The Sailfish honored four seniors before the game in
Alex Aken,
Jesse Ball,
Gerrit Kurtycz, and
Harrison Wood, but the Tars came out on top in a low-scoring affair 10-5.
Rollins got on the board first scoring at the 12:27 mark in the first quarter but after that, both goalies and defenses were superior to the offensive chances that each side was able to create. The 'Fish had 12 shots in the quarter with the best chance being a
Zach Holmes shot that hit the post, but they were unable to break through against Tars goalie Patrick Thomas. The Sailfish defensive intensity was solid throughout the game, especially in the opening half where they forced 18 Rollins turnovers.
Gerrit Kurtycz got the start in net for the Sailfish on his senior day and came up with four big saves in the first quarter, limiting the Tars to two goals in the opening 15 minutes as they scored for the second time with just 40 seconds remaining in the quarter.
The Sailfish beat Thomas for the first time mid-way through the second quarter when
Henry Sloyan ripped a shot that found the top shelf to put PBA on the board.
Jonah Robertson found
Austin Evans five minutes later for the second consecutive Sailfish goal as they trimmed the deficit to 3-2. The Tars would add one more before the half to take a 4-2 lead as Thomas came up with six saves in the second quarter to hold down the Sailfish attack.
Despite struggling in the faceoff circle in the opening half, 6-2, the Sailfish were within striking distance coming out of the half, but the Tars scored the opening two goals of the half to go up 6-2. The Sailfish defense was solid throughout and kept PBA in the contest as
Gunner Gebelein recorded seven ground ball and forced three turnovers, while the senior defensive leaders of
Alex Aken and
Harrison Wood combined for the same stat line.
Sloyan would score his second of the game at the 4:21 mark in the third quarter, but the three-goal deficit was as close as the Sailfish would get it.
Ben Justice would go on to score a nice goal with four seconds left in the third to make it an 8-4 game and
Christopher Tucker would score the game's final score to finish at the 10-5 scoreline.
The Sailfish were better in the faceoff circle in the second half winning 5-of-10 chances but only winning 7-of-18 for the game. The defense was able to force 32 Rollins turnovers for the game, but Patrick Thomas's 12 saves kept the Sailfish out. Kurtycz made 12 saves of his own in net for the 'Fish but the Tars were too much on the day claiming the 10-5 victory.
The Sailfish will return to action next week on April 20 when they are set to travel to Saint Leo. The Lions are 2-3 on the year as the Sailfish will look to pick up their first win of the conference-only season.
