BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic softball team looked to complete the sweep against Lynn on Saturday after taking two from the Fighting Knights on Wednesday.
The Sailfish strayed away from their normal weekend approach by having
Abbey Busby start game one in the circle. She did not allow an earned run as PBA (12-7, 10-5 SSC) clinched a series win, 6-1. The Sailfish had to sweat out game two as the Lynn (0-19, 0-17 SSC) bats came alive, but some clutch hitting in the later innings led to a 6-4 PBA win to complete the sweep.
PBA is scheduled to travel to face Rollins on Thursday. The first game in Winter Park, Fla. takes place at 4 p.m.
Game One: PBA 6, Lynn 1
PBA wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in game one. The reigning SSC Player of the Week,
Meredith Milam drove in
Briana Rodriguez to make it 1-0 PBA in the first inning. A costly error, followed two leadoff singles allowed Lynn to tie the score at one through the first frame.
Rodriguez started the third inning with another leadoff single and a stolen base to give PBA a runner in scoring position with no outs. She advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored after Milam came through again with a sacrifice fly. PBA took a 3-1 lead in the fourth thanks to an RBI single by
Dallas Watterson that scored
Hayley Haas.
The Sailfish added some insurance in the fourth as Haas scored on a
Taylor Pennica sacrifice fly. PBA pushed across two more in the sixth with RBI singles from Haas and Glatczak. Meanwhile Busby took care of her business on the mound, stranding Lynn runners in scoring position in the final four innings of the game to earn the 6-1 win, her ninth of the season.
Rodriguez, Milam, Glatczak and Watterson led the PBA offense with two hits each. Haas finished with two runs scored, two walks and one hit.
Faith Allen and
Janie McCloskey tallied one hit and one walk each. Busby struck out five batters in seven innings, allowing six hits, three walks, and four hit batters without giving up an earned run.
Game Two: PBA 6, Lynn 4
Game two started the same way as game one, with Milam driving in Rodriguez to give PBA a 1-0 lead. Lynn answered in the bottom of the frame again with a pair of runs coming on three hits and two walks. The Sailfish got the lead back the following inning as singles by Allen and Haas set up a two-RBI double by Glatczak to put PBA in from 3-2.
The long ball benefitted Lynn in the third inning. A two-run home run by the Fighting Knights gave the hosts a 4-3 lead. PBA answered in the top of fourth as Watterson came through with an RBI double to score Allen who led-off the frame with a bunt single.
Cambria Arturo got the start in the circle for PBA. She settled in after the third inning, tossing three hitless innings after the homer.
Watterson had ice in her veins as she hit a clutch, RBI-double in the sixth inning with two outs to give PBA a 5-4 lead. The Sailfish plated another insurance run in the seventh as McCloskey doubled to drive in Milam to make it 6-4, PBA. Lynn got two hits in the seventh, but ran itself out of the game as the Fighting Knights were thrown out at home to end the game, 6-4 PBA.
