LAKELAND, Fla. - The Palm Beach Atlantic baseball team traveled to wrap up their season-opening series against Florida Southern. After dropping the opener against the Moccasins on Thursday at home, the Sailfish fell in both games on the road today, losing the first 15-1 and 10-1 in the second.
Game 1: Palm Beach Atlantic 1, Florida Southern 15Â Â
The Sailfish were the first team to get on the board as six-hole hitter
Sean Houck singled and was bunted over in the second inning before scoring on a
Landen Morrison single.Â
Joey Hennessey got the start for the Sailfish and after a quick three up three down first inning, the Mocs rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tor Sehnert hit a two-run homer after a one-out walk and then FSC scored one more behind two infield singles and a fielder choice to reclaim the lead.
Hennessey surrendered one more run in the fourth inning to make it a 4-1 game, but he got into serious trouble in the fifth where the Mocs put five runs on the board. FSC used the long ball again to hurt the Sailfish as Alan Burnsed hit a three-run homerun.
Andrew Sieczkowski came in to relieve Hennessey whose day ended after 4.1 innings giving up nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits. He struck out seven batters on his 89 pitches thrown.Â
After scoring the one early run in the second, the Sailfish offense was quieted by Moccasin's pitching. The 'Fish recorded just four hits off three different FSC pitchers. Morrison was the bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with the lone RBI and drawing a walk.
Keanu Buerosse,
Nathan Espinal, and
Justin Lovell pitched the final three innings of relief for the Sailfish as the Mocs ran away with a 15-1 victory.
Game 2: Palm Beach Atlantic 1, Florida Southern 10
After falling in game one of the doubleheader, the two sides faced off in a seven-inning game two. The Moccasins bats stayed hot in the second game as they ambushed Sailfish starter
Troy Klemm in the first inning. The Sailfish starter failed to record an out in the first inning and was pulled after surrendering six earned runs. Much of the Sailfish pitcher's problems were of his own doing as he walked four of the seven batters he faced.Â
After falling behind early, the Sailfish offense was unable to break through against Andrew Williamson. He went five innings conceding just one hit, two walks, and hitting four Sailfish batters while striking out eight. PBA had runners on base throughout the contest, but left 12 men stranded and were just 1-for-10 with men in scoring position. This including the biggest Sailfish threat that came in the six innings when PBA broke through for one run on a
Carlos Lara sacrifice fly that brought in
Sean Houck. Despite breaking through in the innings, the Sailfish had the bases loaded with just one out and were unable to do more damage to the FSC bullpen.Â
The Moccasins added on one more run in the third and three in the sixth as they got deep into the Sailfish bullpen. The Sailfish finished the game with three hits and the Mocs finished with 6 as both teams pitching staffs struggled with walks, combining for 21 free passes in the game.
Brandon Seltzer was able to reach base three times for the Sailfish while Vaun Brown went 2-for-3 with a homerun for the Moccasins.Â
After falling in their season-opening series, the Sailfish will return to action next when they play one game at Tampa on March 11 and then finish the series by hosting the Spartans for a doubleheader on March 13.      Â
