MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team concluded its non-conference road trip with a matchup at Christian Brothers.
After trailing for most of the second half, the Sailfish nearly pulled off the comeback by cutting the deficit to four points with just under four minutes left. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, Christian Brothers (4-5, 1-2 GSC) ended the game on a 9-2 run to win 67-58. Tonight's matchup was the first matchup between the Sailfish and CBU in PBA's (4-7, 2-2 SSC) DII-era.
Jules Jasmin and Marcus Montalvo led the PBA offense with 10 points each. Jasmin added three rebounds and one block to his stat line while Montalvo grabbed three rebounds of his own off the bench. Jakob Hester finished with nine points, three rebounds, one steal, and one block. Alexander Gorton scored eight points, reaching the 1,000-career points milestone in the second half. Nate Ward added eight points with three rebounds in 19 minutes.
The Sailfish kept the contest closely contested through the first 10 minutes of play. A layup from Jalen Cooper made it 19-17 CBU with eight and a half minutes left in the period. Some sharp-shooting from the Bucs allowed the hosts to extend the lead towards the end of the period, but PBA fought back before the halftime break. An old-fashioned 3-point play from Hester made it 35-27 at the end of the first half.
CBU shot 57 percent from beyond the arc in the second half which allowed the Bucs to extend their lead through the first 10 minutes in the second half. The Sailfish hung around as a bucket from Ward started a 9-0 run to make it 55-52 CBU with seven minutes to go. A layup and a triple put CBU up 60-52, but PBA battled back with four straight points from Hester to make it a four-point game with three minutes to go. Unfortunately for the 'Fish, they failed to get the stops they needed down the stretch. CBU converted at the free-throw line to ice the game and win 69-58.
The Sailfish had one of their best performances when it comes to taking care of the ball. PBA's 10 turnovers were its lowest in a game this season. CBU gained an advantage by winning the rebounding battle 38-27. CBU took advantage of the few turnovers it did force, scoring 16 points off turnovers. The Sailfish struggled to find their stroke from deep, shooting 18 percent from 3-point range in the game.
