TAMPA, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball team continued its road trip with a match against No. 9-ranked Tampa on Saturday afternoon.
PBA (14-13, 7-9 SSC) came into the match with a three-match winning streak, including an upset win over No. 17-ranked Nova Southeastern on Tuesday night. The Sailfish streak ended on Saturday, falling in four sets to the Spartans (23-2, 14-1. SSC). Facing a 2-0 deficit after the first two sets, the Sailfish stayed alive by winning the third set but failed to complete the comeback.
Alyse Cundiff led the Sailfish attack with 16 kills, hitting .238 with five digs and three blocks. Jazz Schmidt tallied a triple-double for the second night in a row, totaling a team-high 19 digs along with 12 kills and 12 assists. Amber Rowoldt finished with 11 kills and six digs. Alyssa Avitia and Ally Smith recorded a double-double each. Avitia recorded a team-high 13 assists and 12 digs while Smith added 10 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Maddy Hooper led the 'Fish with seven blocks while Anna Gregerson and Mary Morgan Formby led the team in efficiency, each hitting .429.
The Sailfish battled back from a 13-7 deficit in the first set. Four kills from Cundiff helped cut the deficit to two, making it a 16-14 Tampa advantage. The lead was cut to one after a service error by the hosts, but Tampa ended the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-19.
PBA jumped out to an early lead in the second set with a kill from Gregerson putting the 'Fish ahead 15-9. The Spartans rattled off five straight points to cut PBA's lead to one. The Sailfish attempted to fight off the Spartan's comeback attempts. The 'Fish led 24-23 with a chance to clinch the second, but Tampa stayed alive and took advantage of two unforced errors by PBA to win 27-25. The 'Fish hit a match-best .300 in the set.
The third set was the most competitive set of the afternoon. The third featured 15 ties and eight lead changes. A kill from Schmidt gave the 'Fish a 23-22 lead down the stretch, but Tampa responded with a pair of points to take a 24-23 lead. The Sailfish avoided the sweep thanks to kills from Cundiff and Formby with an error by the Spartans sealing a 26-24 set win.
Tampa responded in a big way in the fourth set and snuffed out any thought of a PBA comeback. The Spartans broke out to a 17-9 lead in the middle of the set. PBA earned two consecutive points coming out of a timeout, but Tampa shut down the possibility of a third set, winning 25-13.
The 'Fish were outhit by Tampa .266 - .171 despite the Sailfish totaling fewer attack errors (17) than the Spartans (20).
PBA continues its road trip next weekend when it travels to Florida Tech. The match in Melbourne, Fla. starts at 7 p.m.
