Men's Basketball Falls Against West Georgia

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team played its final game of the GSC-SSC South Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon against West Georgia.

The Sailfish failed to overcame a tough first half which consisted in a handful of defensive lapses and a slow start for their offense. West Georgia (1-1), coming off a loss yesterday at the hands of Embry-Riddle, found its stroke from deep, hitting 13-of-27 3-pointers in the game. PBA (0-2) was unable to string together consecutive stops and build a scoring run of its own. The Wolves defeated the Sailfish, 83-63.

Alexander Gorton led PBA with 15 points, going 5-for-7 from the field. He added a pair of rebounds and a pair of steals to his statline. Marcus Montalvo added some offensive firepower off the bench with 12 points along with three rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes.  Jules Jasmin finished with nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Will Lee recorded eight points with three assists and two rebounds.

West Georgia took an early lead at the start of the contest thanks to an early barrage of 3-pointers in the first half. UWG's sixth triple of the game made it 31-18 midway through the first half. With the Wolves leading, 46-27 PBA tried to cut into the deficit before halftime. Montalvo buried a 3-pointer followed by a bucket from Gorton to make it 46-32, bit UWG took the momentum into the halftime break. A dunk in transition barley beat the buzzer to give the Wolves a 48-32 lead at the half.

The Sailfish attempted to work their way back into the game by getting to the free-throw line early in the second half. Half of PBA's points in the first 10 minutes of the second period came from the charity stripe. A 3-pointer by Jakob Hester made it a 65-50 game with nine minutes left, but that was the lowest West Georgia lead for the rest of the contest. The Wolves closed out the 83-63 win, shooting 53 percent from the floor and 48 percent from 3-point range.

PBA's shot from the outside improved in the second half. The Sailfish shot 2-for-7 from beyond the arc in the first half, but converted on 4-of-8 attempts from outside in the second half. The 'Fish outshot UWG at the free throw line, shooting 74 percent on 23 attempts compared to 60 percent on 10 attempts for the Wolves.

The Sailfish return to the court on Wednesday to face Florida National. The game at Rubin Arena takes place at 7 p.m.
